Accuracy of link travel time estimation using probe vehicles

Alexandre Torday; André-Gilles Dumont

Abstract The use of probe vehicles is one of the most efficient and promising technic among the different methods for collecting link travel time data. However, accuracy issues still have to be solved. This paper presents individual recorded link travel time distribution shapes on an urban network link. The Influence of these measurements on the probe vehicles-based estimation accuracy is then described. A division of the overall records in sub-samples according to the upstream and downstream link is proposed. Advantages and disadvantages are commented. The need of integrating the link travel time estimation accuracy in a path context is then demonstrated.
