The rapid progress of information technology continues to stimulate the exploration of innovative materials and architectures for digital processing. Merocyanine dyes appear to be potential candidates for the realization of future data-elaboration, -storage, and -communication devices. While the early stages of this research have been mainly concerned with applications in the fields of photography and medicine, most of the current work on these dyes involves investigation of moderate-to-large intermolecular aggregates, including both red-shifted “J” and blue-shifted “H” aggregates, optical and fluorescent sensors, and applications in solar engineering and medicine. This review summarizes advances in the synthesis, structure, and applications of merocyanine dyes over the last decade.

The reaction of alkyl 4-(2-acetylhydrazino)-2-methyl-3-thiophenecarboxylates with 3-methylbutan-2-one was carried out under the Fischer reaction conditions. The influence of Lewis acids and solvents on the process was studied. A convenient method for the synthesis of thieno [3.2-b]pyrrolenine derivatives was proposed.

ABSTRACT Different types of diarylethenes bearing thiophene derivatives were synthesized by a short way and its photchromic properties were examined. It has been demonstrated for the first time that the photochromism of diarylcyclobutenediones depends on aryl substituents and dithienylcyclobutenediones in contrast to the annulated thiophene derivatives of cyclobutenedione, do not exhibit photochromic properties. An efficient approach for the synthesis of spiro compounds of the thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole series was developed starting from easily accessible substituted thienylhydrazine.

ABSTRACT Two routes to thieno[3,2-b]pyrrolenines are developed and new spiropyranes and spirooxazines based on thienopyrrole are synthesized. Benzene ring in the chromene part of the spiro molecule is also replaced with thiophene one to give new merocyanines.

Regioselective C- or O-alkylation of alkyl 4-hydroxy-2-methylthiophene-3-carboxylates with α-halo ketones is possible, depending on the solvent nature. A convenient preparative method of C-alkylation was proposed and previously not easily accessible β-hydroxythiophene derivatives were synthesized.
