In this letter, we demonstrate a 78.8-km wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network supporting converged transport of 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying, optical phase-modulated 5-GHz radio-over-fiber, fiber and air transmission of 3.125-Gb/s pulse ultrawideband, and 256-quadratic-amplitude modulation wireless interoperability for microwave access.

We present the performance analysis for frequency swept coherent detection of spectral amplitude code (SAC) labelled switching systems for high-speed payload signals with different modulation formats. We consider a payload bit-rate of 40 Gbit/s for an intensity modulation (IM), differential phase shift keying (DPSK), differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) and 4-channel multi-rate DQPSK payload signals with 2.5, 10, 20 and 80 Gb/s rates for comparison purposes. The label and payload signal performances are assessed by the eye-diagram opening factor (EOF) and bit-error rate (BER) as function of the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). Our proposed SAC label detection method offers flexible, robust and multi-bit-rate label performance for payload signal with different modulation formats.

This paper analyzes experimentally and by numerical simulations an optical frame retimer and synchronizer unit for 10 Gbit/s Ethernet input frames. The unit is envisaged to be applied in the design of an optically transparent router for Optical Time Division Multiplexed (OTDM) links, aggregating traffic from several 10 Gbit/s Ethernet (10 GE) links. The scheme is based on time-lenses implemented through a combination of a sinusoidally driven optical phase modulation and linear dispersion. Our analysis extracts the operation range of the scheme used for synchronization and retiming in the context of 10 Gbit/s Ethernet, considering the frequency offset to the local clock within the specified standard tolerance (i.e. ± 1 MHz for 10 Gbit/s Ethernet) and the Ethernet frame size (i.e. up to 1526 bytes). We also provide preliminary design insights to increase the operation range.

We propose and demonstrate experimentally a scheme for the demodulation of 21.4-Gb/s return-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keying signals in packet-switched wavelength routed networks where packets at different wavelengths are arriving to the same demodulator. The idea is based on wavelength conversion, and in the demonstration, all channels were received error-free after wavelength conversion. In a packet arrival emulation, the ability of handling incoming packets at different wavelengths were successfully demonstrated.

In this article, we introduce optical coherent detection based access networks intended for next generation converged wireless-wireline passive optical networks (PONs). We identify problems with currently employed PON technologies based on time division multiplexing (TDM) and direct detection, present experimental demonstrations of converged systems, and present a solution based on reuse of existing fiber links. We present bi-directional transmission of WiMAX-compliant signaling over an 80-km PON, using a single optical wavelength. Colorless, bi-directional transmission of 256-QAM modulation on a 2.4-GHz RF carrier was achieved at 100-Mb/s (downlink) and 64-Mb/s (uplink).
