Low job satisfaction has been cited as a possible cause of the current teaching crisis in the UK. This article reports on a study that examined job satisfaction among secondary school teachers in different types of secondary school. The results indicate a significant difference in the overall job satisfaction scores of teachers by type of school. Teachers in independent and privately-managed schools exhibited the highest satisfaction levels while those in foundation schools exhibited the lowest. No significant difference in satisfaction was found when the data were analysed by age, gender and length of service.

This paper investigates the relationships between job satisfaction, individual job facets, socio‐demographic variables and job performance in the Lebanese commercial banking sector. The sample consists of 202 employees from nine commercial banks. The results indicate that job satisfaction is not independent in all job facets and that satisfaction with one facet might lead to satisfaction with another. Female employees were found to be less satisfied with all facets except pay. Those with lower educational qualifications were least satisfied. Self‐reported job performance was found to increase with tenure.

Earlier studies suggest age is positively associated with job satisfaction, while others use length of service, or tenure, as a predictor of job satisfaction levels. This article examines whether age and tenure are individual determinants of satisfaction, or whether there is an interaction between the two. The results indicate that employee age is not significantly associated with overall job satisfaction level, but that tenure is. There is also significant relationship between tenure and facets of satisfaction (job, pay and fringe benefits), but the effect of tenure on satisfaction is significantly modified by age.

This study examines the inter‐relationship between a persons role as appraisee and/or appraiser in a performance appraisal system (PAS) and level of satisfaction expressed with the system. It builds on earlier US studies which found that being an appraiser and, therefore, also an appraisee increased a persons satisfaction level compared with those who were appraisees only. Data were gathered from 382 respondents to examine three aspects of organisational justice which are known to influence satisfaction with PASs. The results indicate no intrinsic difference in satisfaction level linked to role in administering a PAS and that the source of satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction with the PAS was not equally attributable to all aspects of organisational justice.

The introduction of the National Minimum Wage provides an opportunity to examine whether hotel managers act strategically. Most of our sample are affected by this wage floor, and their managers have selected clear response strategies. The majority, 55 per cent, planned to adopt cost minimisation techniques and one third the quality enhancement route.
