El periplo norteafricano de Hannón y la rivalidad gaditano-cartaginesa de los siglos IV-III A. C

The aim of this work is a review of the research on the Hanno’s periplus, usually mentioned in the studies about the knowledge of the Canary Islands during the Antiquity. If it was accomplished this trip, it must be after of the Second Treated between Carthage and Rome (348 BC), with the punic hegemony ratified in the treaties of 306 BC and 279 BC, and before the First Punic War (264-241 BC). They will be the conditions of the Second Treated of Carthage with Rome the factor that stressed the rivalry between Cadiz and Carthage, since was hindering the gaditanian trade with Southern Italy and Greece, being interposed Carthage as intermediary of the principal gaditanian products, garum and tin, in their marketing toward Central and Eastern Mediterranean. It is precisely the commercial rivalry between Cadiz and Carthage the reason because are not mentioned Cadiz or Lixus in the Hanno’s periplus, expedition which Carthage would try to establishing specific punic factories in the North African Atlantic coast, previously narrow linked to Cadiz.
