Turkish prospective teachers’ understanding and misunderstanding on global warming

A. Ocal; Mustafa Kışoğlu; Ali Alaş; Hasan Gürbüz

The key objective of this study is to determine the Turkish elementary prospective teachers’ opinions on global warming. It is also aimed to establish prospective teachers’ views about the environmental education in Turkish universities. A true–false type scale was administered to 564 prospective teachers from science education, social studies education and primary school education departments of three universities in Turkey. The findings revealed that prospective teachers had some misunderstandings about global warming. It was also found that they accessed information on global warming through informal sources such as TV, radio and Internet. In addition, there were significant differences in participants’ total scores in terms of gender and department. According to the findings, prospective teachers thought that environmental education given at universities was not adequate for various reasons.

Ali Alaş; Ahmet Öktener; Ali Iscimen; Jean Paul Trilles

Nerocila bivittata (Crustacea, Isopoda, Cymothoidae) is reported for the first time on the caudal peduncle of the Rusty blenny, Parablennius sanguinolentus (Teleostei, Perciformes, Blenniidae), collected from Samsun Coast, Black Sea, Turkey. N. bivittata parasitized 7.4% (2 of 27) of the P. sanguinolentus collected.

Confirmed Occurrence of Caligus mugilis Brian (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida; Caligidae) with Morphological Characters in Turkish Marine Waters

Ali Alaş; Ahmet Öktener

The aim of this study is to determine Caligus mugilis including morphological characters on Mugil cephalus from Bandırma Bay in Turkey. The flathead grey mullet, Mugil cephalus were examined for the ectoparasites in 2016. Caligus mugilis Brian, 1935 (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida, Caligidae) is confirmed for the first time in Turkish marine waters. Also, some morphological characters of this parasitic copepod are described. All parasites were firmly attached to the gill filaments of the host. Parasite prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance were 9.3%, 1, 0.09, respectively. It should be noted that Caligus mugilis was reported by some researcher in 1989, however there was uncertainty about the occurrence of Caligus mugilis in Turkey. This controversial issue is cleared with this study.

Review of Parasitic Copepods Recorded in Fish from Turkey

Ali Alaş; Ahmet Öktener; Dilek Türker

Abstract This review presents the occurrence of 62 parasitic copepod species from 72 different fish species (64 wild, two cultured, seven from aquarium) from Turkey. The parasite species list is arranged by providing parasite species name, host fish, location of host fish capture and author, date of published record. All parasites and their hosts are confirmed with the recent systematic accounts and full taxonomic account according to literature and internet database. Siphonostomatoida with 47 species and Caligidae with 12 species are the dominant order and family among parasitic copepoda with regard to species diversity, host distribution and location.

Redescription of Elthusa sinuata (Koelbel, 1879) Comb.Nov. (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) Parasitizing the Red Bandfish in Turkey

Ahmet Öktener; Jean Paul Trilles; Engin Kocabaş; Haşim İnceoğlu; Ali Alaş

Livoneca sinuata Koelbel, 1879 (Isopoda, Cymothoidae) is known from the Mediterranean Sea. In this study, this species is redescribed and transferred to the genus Elthusa according to the current status of this: body weakly twisted, antennula shorter than antenna, posterior margin of cephalon not trilobed, pleonite 1 slightly narrower than pleonite 2, maxilliped with oostegital lobe and pleopods all lamellar, without lobes or folds. This species was collected on the red bandfish, Cepola macrophthalma, and reported for the first time in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. The species is also photographed for the first time on the host.

The Sea of Marmara: New Locality for Lepeophtheirus europaensis Zedam, Berrebi, Renaud, Raibaut and Gabrion, 1988 (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida, Caligidae) from Turkey

Ali Alaş; Ahmet Öktener; Dilek Türker

Abstract Lepeophtheirus europaensis Zeddam, Berrebi, Renaud, Raibaut and Gabrion, 1988 (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida, Caligidae) an ectoparasite of flatfishes, was reported for the first time in the Sea of Marmara Coasts. Some morphological characters of this parasitic copepod are given using original photographs and drawings. The general morphology, the mouth parts (antenna, mandible, maxillule, maxilla, and maxilliped), the outgrowth developed between the post-antennary process and the antenna, the setal and spinal formula from first leg to fourth leg in this study are compatible according to the specific literature.

Some Morphological Characters of Female of Mothocya epimerica Costa, 1851 (Flabellifera: Cymothoidae) from Sea of Marmara

Ali Alaş; Ahmet Öktener; Dilek Türker

Abstract Mothocya epimerica Costa, 1851 (Flabellifera: Cymothoidae) is a cymothoid parasite of fishes belonging to Atherinidae (Atherina hepsetus, Atherina boyeri) from Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Öktener and Sezgin (2000) recorded this parasite for the first time in Turkey. The mentioned authors presented some morphological characters, although, some characters are not explained in the publication. Some morphological characters seen on the mandible, maxilliped, maxilla, maxillue and the spines on pleopods of the female of M. epimerica are shown. The characters presented in our study are based on the drawings made from collected specimens.

Cases of External Myiasis Caused by Diptera (Sarcophaga sp.) on Three Cyprinid Species

Ahmet Öktener; Ali Alaş

Sarcophaga sp. caused external myiases on three cyprinid species caught from Atatürk Dam Lake, Turkey) in July 2006. A total of 130 live dipteran larvae were collected from the body surfaces of Cyprinus carpio L., 1758, Barbus grypus Heckel, 1843, and Capoeta trutta Heckel, 1843. There was 100% infestation of all three species of fish, with a mean intensity of 13.6 for C. carpio , 5.6 for B. grypus , and 4.3 for C. trutta . The myiases were probably accidental infections on stressed and immobilized fishes.
