Robust Location and Scale Estimation Based on the Univariate Generalized t (GT) Distribution

Olcay Arslan; Ali I. Genç

Abstract In this paper, we consider the univariate generalized t (GT) distribution, which is introduced by McDonald and Newey ((1988) Partially adaptive estimation of regression models via the generalized t distribution. Econometric Theory 4:428–457.). We show that the maximum likelihood estimators for the location and the scale parameters of a GT distribution with known shape parameters can provide alternative robust estimators for the location and scale parameters of a data set. We investigate the existence and the uniqueness of the maximum likelihood estimators. We show that the likelihood function can be unimodal or multimodal depending on the different choices of the shape parameters.

A new generalized two-sided class of distributions with an emphasis on two-sided generalized normal distribution

Mustafa Ç. Korkmaz; Ali I. Genç

ABSTRACT The ordinary-G class of distributions is defined to have the cumulative distribution function (cdf) as the value of the cdf of the ordinary distribution F whose range is the unit interval at G, that is, F(G), and it generalizes the ordinary distribution. In this work, we consider the standard two-sided power distribution to define other classes like the beta-G and the Kumaraswamy-G classes. We extend the idea of two-sidedness to other ordinary distributions like normal. After studying the basic properties of the new class in general setting, we consider the two-sided generalized normal distribution with maximum likelihood estimation procedure.

A Lifetime Distribution Based on a Transformation of a Two-Sided Power Variate

Mustafa C. Korkmaz; Ali I. Genç

We introduce a new generalization of Weibull distribution by making use of a transformation of the standard twosided power distributed random variable. Weibull and the exponentiated Weibull distributions are submodels of this new distribution. We show that this newly defined distribution is in fact a mixture of the truncated forms of Weibull and the exponentiated Weibull distributions. The new distribution has two shape parameters that make it more flexible for modeling data than Weibull and exponentiated Weibull distributions. We study its properties, consider the maximum likelihood estimation procedure and apply it on some real data sets from reliability.

Two-Sided Generalized Exponential Distribution

Mustafa Ç. Korkmaz; Ali I. Genç

We derive a generalization of the exponential distribution by making log transformation of the standard two-sided power distribution. We show that this new generalization is in fact a mixture of a truncated exponential distribution and truncated generalized exponential distribution introduced by Gupta and Kundu [Generalized exponential distributions. Aust. N. Z. J. Stat. 41(1999):173–188]. The newly defined distribution is more flexible for modeling data than the ordinary exponential distribution. We study its properties, estimate the parameters, and demonstrate it on some well-known real data sets comparing other existing methods.

Moments of order statistics of the standard two-sided power distribution

Çağatay Çetinkaya; Ali I. Genç

ABSTRACT The standard two-sided power distribution is a flexible distribution having uniform, power function and triangular as subdistributions, and it is a reasonable alternative to the Laplace distribution in some cases. In this work, computationally efficient expressions for moments of order statistics, expressions for L-moments, and asymptotic results for sample extrema are derived. Then a simulation study is performed for the location-scale estimation problem of a small data set by considering the maximum likelihood estimation method and the best linear unbiased estimation method based on the moments of order statistics.

The exponentiated Fréchet regression: an alternative model for actuarial modelling purposes

Fatma F. Gündüz; Ali I. Genç

ABSTRACT In this paper we introduce the exponentiated Fréchet regression for modelling positive responses having a long-tailed distribution in a regression model, which are common in actuarial statistics. We propose two parameterizations each of which links the regression parameters with the explanatory variables. We then discuss the maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters both theoretically and empirically. In order to meet the needs of an actuary, closed-form expressions for certain risk measures for the exponentiated Fréchet distribution are also derived. We employ the proposed model to a motorcycle claim size data set.

Distribution of the Product of a Pair of Independent Two-Sided Power Variates

Selim Gündüz; Ali I. Genç

ABSTRACT The distributions of algebraic functions of random variables are important in theory of probability and statistics and other areas such as engineering, reliability, and actuarial applications, and many results based on various distributions are available in the literature. The two-sided power distribution is defined on a bounded range, and it is a generalization of the uniform, triangular, and power-function probability distributions. This paper gives the exact distribution of the product of two independent two-sided power-distributed random variables in a computable representation. The percentiles of the product are then computed, and a real data application is given.

An Absolutely Continuous Bivariate Topp-Leone Distribution: A Useful Model on a Bounded Domain

Ali I. Genç

ABSTRACT We introduce an absolutely continuous bivariate generalization of the Topp–Leone distribution, which is a special member of the proportional reversed hazard family using a one-parameter bivariate exchangeable distribution. We show that a copula approach could also be used in defining the bivariate Topp–Leone distribution. The marginal distributions of the new bivariate distribution have also Topp–Leone distributions. We study its distributional and dependence properties. We estimate the parameters by maximum-likelihood procedure, perform a simulation study on the estimators, and apply them to a real data set. Furthermore, we give a way of generating bivariate distributions using the proposed distribution.

Truncated inverted generalized exponential distribution and its properties

Ali I. Genç

ABSTRACT The inverted generalized exponential distribution is defined as an alternative model for lifetime data. The existence of moments of this distribution is shown to hold under some restrictions. However, all the moments exist for the truncated inverted generalized exponential distribution and closed-form expressions for them are derived in this article. The distributional properties of this truncated distribution are studied. Maximum likelihood estimation method is discussed for the estimation of the parameters of the distribution both theoretically and empirically. In order to see the modeling performance of the distribution, two real datasets are analyzed.
