In flora of Turkey, there are six species of Carthamus L: Carthamus dentatus (Forssk.) Vahl., C. glaucus M. Bieb. subsp. glaucus, C. lanatus L., C. tenuis (Boiss. & Blanche) Bornm., C. persicus Desf. ex Willd. and C. tinctorius L. Within these species, C. tinctorius L. is an alien species for the Turkish flora. The pollen grains belonging to six taxa collected from different locations of Anatolia and examined both under light microscope (LM) and under scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result of these examinations and measurements, pollen grains of taxa are radially symmetrical, isopolar, oblate-spheroid, spheroid, tricolporate rarely tetracolporate, echinate. There are high similarities among taxa but some differences are recorded in size and spin length. According to cluster analyses of Carthamus species’ pollens, C. glaucus and C. tenuis have the most similar pollens. C. dentatus grouped with these two. C. persicus placed as the closest relative of C. tinctorius in the dendrogram.

Pollen Morphology of an Endangered, Endemic Anatolian Species, Noccaea aghrica (P.H.Davis & Kit Tan) M.Fırat & Özüdoğru (Brassicaceae)

In this study, some of the physical and anatomical properties of Chestnut Blight Diseased (CBD) wood were investigated, and the study also included observations using Raman spectroscopy. The objective of these investigations was to determine the extent of the damage that is done to the wood of the diseased chestnut trees, which must be removed from the forest and used in the manufacture of industrial products. It was indicated that most of the adverse effects of the disease were in the vascular cambium. There was a clear indication of deterioration of the wood in the last growth ring next to vascular cambium. In the diseased secondary xylem region next to vascular cambium; vessel diameter, vessel frequency and vessel element length had a decrease, and vessel and other cells were irregular compared to healthy wood. Spores were detected and identified as Cryphonectria parasitica (Murrill). Annual ring properties (annual growth ring width, latewood percentage, etc.) were similar in diseased wood compared to healthy wood. The Raman spectroscopy results showed no significant changes in the structure of the cell wall or its components. After removing the diseased parts, unlimited usage of formerly wood is possible. Heat treatment of the wood is suggested before use in the interest of sanitation and dimensional stability.

Ali Savaş Bülbül; Elşad Hüseyin; Faruk Selçuk

In this research the microfungi of Bartin forest ecosystems has been investigated. After revaluation of more than one hundred plant samples collected from the research area in September 16-17, 2012, 30 species belonging to 19 families and 26 genera of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota are determined. 26 species are belonging to Ascomycota and 4 species are belonging to Basidiomycota. 7 spesies of Ascomycota belonging to Sordariomycetes, 4 species belonging to Leotiomycetes while 15 are belonging to Dothideomycetes. All species belong to Xylotrophical and Phyllotrophical groups. 21 of 30 species are pathogens or parasites. 9 species are saprobiont. The genera Cheiromyces and Neosetophoma, C. stellatus, N. samararum, Phyllosticta ruscicola, Physalospora eriostega, Mycosphaerella winteri, Metasphaeria errabunda and Nectria wiridescens species are recorded for the first time for the Turkish Mycota
