This paper presents a proposal for a manufacturing upper ontology, aimed to draft a common semantic net in manufacturing domain. Usefulness of ontologies for data formalization and sharing, especially in a manufacturing environment, are first discussed. Details are given about the Web ontology language (OWL) and its adequation for ontologies in the manufacturing systems is shown. A concrete proposal named MASON (MAnufacturings Semantics ONtology) is presented and two applications of this ontology are exposed: automatic cost estimation and semantic-aware multiagent system for manufacturing

The goal of this project is to conceive methods and computer tools to aid the design of a forged product by taking into account the competences and resources of the enterprise and the constraints related on the manufacturing process. For that, it is necessary to know not only the process knowledge but also the information concerning the resources (material, financial, human or of another nature), the product description during the design cycle and the production data. The design aid computer tool called Ontoforge will be applicable to the forging domain, restricted to hot stamping, in order not to disperse into a too broad domain. However, this area could be widened in the future. In the first section, the context of the project will be presented, before an example illustrates the kind of supported problems. In the third part are explained the mechanisms that intervene to supply the response to these problems. We discuss finally the benefits and drawbacks of the presented method.

this paper presents the integration of the manufacturing upper ontology called manufacturings semantics ontology (MASON) for the design of reconfigurable machine tool (rmt) using fbs approach. the fbs approach is introduced and its application for machine tool design is discussed. a concrete proposal MASON with its main classes and object properties is discussed. its application in the domain of production system design is discussed.

In order to reduce product and process design time and cost, the integration of the relationships between product data and manufacturing data is essential. This paper proposes an original approach to support the above mentionned integration. This approach is a mix of rule based and classification approaches, and has been implemented in a computer tool which allows the formalization and use of manufacturing knowledge.

Engineering cost estimation is now compulsory from the very first stages of design. The later a cost issue will be detected, the more it will cost. This paper tends to show how to define which information is needed to allow this estimation to be done. A taxonomy that builds a structure in this information has been created. Using this taxonomy, we designed a method to calculate manufacturing costs thanks to an expert system. The cost is determined by considering Cost Entities using pertinent inductors and parametric calculation methods.

Calculation of assembly clearance is the basis of analysis on assembly problems, and the real assembly surface is the nonideal surface. In this paper, the concept of assembly clearance on nonideal surface is defined and the calculation algorithm of assembly clearance is designed. Based on the calculation, the concept of clearance surface is put forward to express the distribution of assembly clearance on nonideal surface as it can assist the analysis of assembly problems. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by the calculation of the assembly clearance between the surfaces of piston and cylinder.
