Future development of electronic journals: a Delphi survey

Alice Keller

This paper presents the results of an international and interdisciplinary Delphi survey on the future development of electronic journals. The expert panel comprised 45 scientists, publishers, librarians, journal agents and consultants. The survey covered five areas of interest regarding e‐journals: future role of scholarly journal literature; scenarios for the journal of the future; serials crisis; archiving of e‐journals; and new pricing and access models. The Delphi survey studied changes expected within the next five to ten years. The results are discussed and indicate that, throughout their 300‐year history, journals have never been faced with as many changes as we are experiencing now, or expect to see within the next five to ten years.

Long-term access to e-journals: what exactly can we promise our readers?

Alice Keller; Jonathan McAslan; Claire Duddy

Many readers and librarians are concerned about long-term access to electronic resources, particularly e-journals. Oxford University Library Services (OULS) is committed to ensuring long- term access to licensed electronic journal content where the publisher and licensing model allow for this. But, as with everything to do with electronic access, the position is complicated. This article presents and explains the ‘Long-term Access Policy for E-Journals’ formulated by OULS.

Forschungsunterstützung an australischen Universitätsbibliotheken

Alice Keller

Serials rationalization at Oxford University Library Services using Ulrich's Serials Analysis System

Alice Keller; Dag Martinsen

Oxford University Library Services (OULS) brings together collections of 36 centrally funded libraries in Oxford. The integration of collections is a lengthy and very complex process. OULS has chosen Bowkers Ulrichs Serials Analysis System (USAS) as the most suitable tool to analyse and rationalize its serials collections. This article describes the background to the project and the implementation of USAS at Oxford University. Gathering and uploading serials information from 36 different university libraries into one system proved to be a challenging task. The internal issues universities may face as they start to gather consistent serials information are discussed, and the problems arising from uploading serials data into USAS are considered. Despite these drawbacks OULS is convinced that the new analysis system from Bowker is a potentially very powerful tool for local, regional and national collection management.

Finanzierungsmodelle für Open-Access-Zeitschriften

Alice Keller

Attitudes among German- and English-Speaking Librarians toward (Automatic) Subject Indexing

Alice Keller

The survey described in this article investigates the attitudes of librarians in German- and English-speaking countries toward subject indexing in general, and automatic subject indexing in particular. The results show great similarity between attitudes in both language areas. Respondents agree that the current quality standards should be upheld and dismiss critical voices claiming that subject indexing has lost relevance. With regard to automatic subject indexing, respondents demonstrate considerable skepticism—both with regard to the likely timeframe and the expected quality of such systems. The author considers how this low acceptance poses a difficulty for those involved in change management.
