Teenagers like to draw. A drawing is a fundamental object of creativity in the process of re-construction and change typical of this period. However, theoretical approaches often consider that the evolution of the stages of drawing come to an end in adolescence. It is important to consider the practical and clinical benefit of drawing and to develop expression-based activities which can be carried out with this population.

In a context of migration, some parents experience difficulties in passing on their culture and their knowledge, which makes it difficult to achieve reciprocal recognition and to establish a feeling of filiation and heritage. In this context, maintaining the rites of passage enables their symbolic effectiveness and creativity to be maintained. Circumcision, in particular, is a key stage of this process in the Maghreb.

In a Senegalese society undergoing profound change, holding on to certain beliefs and social and cultural practices can sometimes prove difficult. Prevention and care systems must take into account social and cultural representations in order to support these families as best as possible. In a Senegalese society undergoing profound change, holding on to certain beliefs and social and cultural practices can sometimes prove difficult. Claire, a French-Korean teenager suffering from anorexia, favours drawing as a means of self-expression. Her graphic creations illustrate the search for identity of this child of migrants. Struggling with an impossible identification linked to her filiation, drawing represents for her a real object of mediation. It gives meaning to what dwells within her and constitutes the medium of her creativity.

Mediation through writing is a valuable tool to be used as a means of symbolisation in the period of psychological and physical tensions common to adolescence. By creating their own space in which to create, the evolving written account enables young people to think about their psychological life by considering the place of each individual. Each clue in the writing is to be understood in relation to the way the adolescent functions psychologically.

Embracing death and finding the right words to represent it is a dangerous exercise when the death is traumatic and when it remains suspended on emotions and affects. The cross-cultural consultation enables the trauma to be developed and makes room for rituals and words. The childrens drawings come to represent the traumatic transfer of the connections and fears, and the need to reconstruct a cultural cocoon.
