INTRODUCTION: Anxiety is a common diagnosis found in elderly and is commonly associated with breathing abnormalities. Associated with aging, it is also found a sedentary lifestyle, which is an important risk factor for diseases. The practice of regular physical activities improves anxiety and cardiorespiratory condition. Between the types of physical activities, dance stands out as a good option for elderly. OBJECTIVE: To describe the influence of regular dance on anxiety and respiratory parameters of elderly dancers when compared with sedentary elders. METHODOLOGY: Were evaluated 18 elders, divided into two groups: dancers (G1 group) and sedentary (G2 group). In G1 and G2 groups it was applied the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, cirtometry, spirometry and manovacuometry, in addition of the questionnaire of Baecke modified to elders, only for the group G2, in order to ensure the sedentary lifestyle of the participants. Descriptive statistics were used to synthesize the data. RESULTS: The participants in group G1 had higher values in relation of state-anxiety and maximal expiratory pressure. Cirtometry at basal level was higher in participants of group G1, while the xiphoid level was greater in group G2. All participants had spirometry values within the normal ranges, with no differences between groups. CONCLUSION: We observed on elders who practice dance regularly lower level of trait-anxiety, appropriate values of maximal expiratory pressure and higher values on cirtometry at basal level.

With the objective to evaluate possible differences in the values obtained in the thoracoabdominal cirtometry in orthostatism compared with the results in supine, 30 subjects with mean age 27.8±4.4 years were evaluated according to the following parameters: anthropometry, pulmonary function test and thocacoabdominal cirtometry. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify data normality and the t test was performed in order to compare the thoracoabdominal cirtometry measurements in supine and in orthostatism positions. There were no significant differences in axillar and xiphoid mobility between measurements obtained in supine and orthostatism. The abdominal mobility measured in orthostatism (2.54±1.39 cm) was significantly lower (34.35%) when compared to the mobility obtained in supine (3.71±1.78 cm; p<0.001). The thoracic cirtometry can be performed in orthostatism as an alternative for the evaluation of patients with orthopnea. The abdominal cirtometry can also be performed in this posture, with the expected one-third reduction in the abdominal mobility obtained in supine.

Introduction: during the initial periods of the use of dialysis, all effort is devoted to the maintenance of life. Following the progress reached in this regard, there is now concern about the emotional aspects of chronic renal patients and their quality of life. Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between quality of life and depressive symptoms in chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: The sample consisted of 30 patients interviewed using the the Major Depression Inventory (MDI) and abbreviated WHOQOL quality of life questionnaires. Results: The prevalence of depression was 37%. Quality of life was considered good for 89.6% of the sample. There was a weak association (Pearson 0.455) between the depression and quality of life variables. Conclusions: This sample showed good levels of quality of life and moderate levels of depressive symptoms.
