Analysis of Trace Elements in Groundwater Using ICP-OES and TXRF Techniques and Its Compliance with Brazilian Protection Standards

Fernando Rodolfo Espinoza-Quiñones; Aparecido Nivaldo Módenes; Aline Roberta de Pauli; Soraya Moreno Palácio

In this work, an assessment of groundwater quality and its compliance with Brazilian environmental protection standards was carried out. Ground waters from the Serra Geral aquifer are currently used for human consumption at the western region of the Brazilian state of Paraná. Ground water samples from 10 wells covering the entire Toledo municipality rural region were collected and analysed by two highly accurate and sensitive spectrometric techniques: inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and total reflection X-ray spectrometry (TXRF). Among all detected elements, 18 elements (As, Ba, Br, Ca, Pb, Cl, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, P, S, Mn, Ni, K, Ti, V and Zn) were measured by the TXRF technique while three elements (B, Mg and Na) were measured by ICP-OES. Trace element concentration levels were then compared with Brazilian environmental legislation (BEL). From the results obtained, concentrations of chromium, iron, arsenic, selenium, manganese and barium were detectable in some wells at slightly above the maximum limits allowed by the BEL.

In this study, the water quality of the Marreco River in the municipality of Toledo, PR, Brazil was investigated as part of a monitoring program. Conventional water pollution parameters (pH, turbidity, conductivity, COD, DO, ammonia, and total phosphorus) and metal elements were analyzed. Acute toxicity bioassays were conducted by the bacterial bioluminescence method, using the indicator Vibrio fischeri to evaluate the toxic effect of the contaminants. Principal components analysis (PCA) and Pearson’s correlation were applied to assess the statistical correlation between the physicochemical parameters and metals in the water samples. There is strong evidence, supported by Pearson and PCA analyses, of the presence of elevated levels of K and Ca associated with anthropogenic activities installed in the river basin.

In this work, the analytical capability of the total reflection X-ray fluorescence technique with the S2 PICOFOX spectrometer was investigated. A set of certified reference materials was prepared as solid particulate for TXRF analysis. Experimental data of sensitivity, limits of detection and recovery for many elements were obtained. Good sensitivity and limits of detection with a good recovery range of around 90-110% were achieved. Thus, the TXRF technique exhibits a good analytical potential for its applicability on different materials.
