Development of Wood-Based Multi-Layer Systems in Existing Building Stock

Alireza Fadai; Wolfgang Winter; Dimitrios Stefanoudakis; Karlheinz Hollinsky

The possible significance of natural building materials and their application in the existing building stock is the question of overriding importance and was explored on two levels: 1) Developing wood-based building components and optimizing manufacturing processes;2) adapted design methods, structural analysis of historical wood-based structures and respectively of contemporary structural concepts especially according to fire and earthquake. This paper illustrates the development and application of wood-based multi-layer shear wall and floor systems in existing building stocks. Several cases of mixing different material elements use for shear walls and floor constructions are presented.

A Historical Large Span Timber Construction - Refurbishment of the Main Cupola of Vienna University of Technology

Stefan Jaksch; Alireza Fadai; Wolfgang Winter

We present the refurbishment work on a 200-year-old timber structure the principal cupola on top of the main building of the Vienna University of Technology (VUT). Retrofitting plans for this structure included a different use of the space underneath the cupola and leaving the ancient timber construction visible. This called for an examination of the quality of the ancient wood material, the development of modern safety concepts for fire and earthquake incidents within the modified use scenario, additional constructional measures to fulfil the requirements of these new concepts and doing an up-to-date structural analysis following the regulations given by the Eurocodes.
