The Authorial Spirit? Biblical Citations in Jacob of Edessa's Hexaemeron

Alison G. Salvesen

The Syrian Orthodox bishop and polymath Jacob of Edessa (c. 630–708 CE) produced his own Syriac version of the Old Testament which combined the Peshitta and Greek traditions. Similarly composite citations of Scripture appear in his other works, raising the question of their relationship to his own biblical version. This article analyses some examples of citations of the book of Job that appear in Jacobs first treatise in his Hexaemeron, on the nature of angels.
