Plastics with Selective Wavelength Absorption for Safety and Comfort

Hazards of ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation are briefly reviewed, with emphasis placed on possible damage to the eye. Properties of new plastic eye safety products designed for protection against welding arcs, laser radiation, and nuclear flash are presented. The use of plastic films and sheets to control the temperature of buildings and the comfort of individuals is described.

Recently, urethane foams composed primarily of hydratable calcium sulfate plasters have been prepared in our laboratories. Such foams have ranged from rubbery products to quite rigid materials depending on the nature of the urethane prepolymer used and/or the amount of gypsum used as the filler.
