Summary An evaluation of the techniques of amniocentesis and spectrophotometric analysis of amniotic fluid in 49 Rh-sensitized pregnancies encompassing 101 procedures indicates that this is a highly accurate method of determining the intrauterine state of the fetus and should greatly improve the perinatal survival of infants affected with this disease. The series was analyzed for 8 possible complications. We have reconfirmed that amniocentesis has a wide margin of safety as a diagnostic and prognostic procedure presenting minimum risks to mother and fetus when properly performed.

Experience with the use of hypertonic solutions for the termination of 17 pregnancies has been reported. A success rate approaching 90 per cent with the use of hypertonic saline was encountered. No ill effects were seen. The precautionary measures believed to be necessary to eliminate risks have been stressed.
