Deutsch-Polnische Erinnerungsorte im Kontext des Faches Deutsch als Fremdsprache an deutschen und polnischen Hochschulen

Camilla Badstübner-Kizik; Almut Hille

German-Polish Realms of Memory in the Context of German as a Foreign Language in Polish and German Universities Abstract In search for concepts to stimulate integrated language and culturerelated teaching and learning processes in the foreign language classroom, it is worth paying attention to the vibrant concept of cultural memory. In a variety of ways, it encourages language and culture awareness training that is tightly connected with language learning. Realms of memory, acting as both products and markers of a complex cultural memory, can reveal to what extent (by whom, by which means, to what aims) cultural patterns and meanings are constructed, how they change, and under which circumstances they survive over long periods of time. Modern foreign language didactics should make use of this concept, especially given that realms of memory manifest themselves as, e. g., texts, pictures, sounds, architecture, historic and mythic persons, objects, terms and whole cultural concepts. Use of cultural memory opens up considerable didactic potential. This article contains a short overview of an ongoing project carried out by two German and two Polish universities, which aims at the discussion and utilisation of these issues in culture- and languagefocused academic contexts.

Camilla Badstübner-Kizik; Almut Hille

ckung des Charisma, München 2007), as well as seminal earlier works by Stefan Breuer (Ästhetischer Fundamentalismus. Stefan George und der deutsche Antimodern ismus, Darmstadt 1996), Carola Groppe (Die Macht der Bildung. Das deutsche Bürgertum und der GeorgeKreis 1890– 1933, Köln 1997), and Rainer Kolk (Literarische Gruppenbildung. Am Beispiel des GeorgeKreises 1890– 1945, Tübingen 1998). It deservedly won the nonfi ction prize of the Leipzig Book Fair in 2010. Reviewers to date have almost without exception been full of praise and tended to ignore the book’s various weaknesses which shall be briefl y enumerated here. Factual errors aside (Kantorowicz, for instance, should not be associated, as Robert Lerner has pointed out, with the homosexual poets of the San Francisco Renaissance), Raulff offers a somewhat skewed account of the Circle’s membership by discussing at considerable length fi gures such as Hubertus zu Löwenstein and Erich von Kahler who belonged at best to the fringes of the Circle and whose writings can hardly be considered representative. 1968 is a somewhat arbitrary terminus ad quem, especially in view of the extraordinary George renaissance in Germany since the 1990s. More could and more should have been said about Wolfgang Frommel and his ventures (fi rst the publishing house Die Runde and then the journal Castrum Peregrini) to uphold Georgean ideas after 1933. Raulff overestimates George’s impact on the educational reformers of the 1950s and 1960s who were at least as indebted to fi gures of the Lebensreform, the Reformpädagogik and the Landerziehungsheimbewegung. At the same time, Raulff—like several scholars before him—underestimates the power of George’s poetry. More than anything else, this was the stuff that held the members of the Circle together and that informed their lives and works, even after George’s death. Raulff’s seeming inability or unwillingness to take seriously George’s verse is one of the reasons why his book fails to provide an answer to what is, after all, the central explanandum, viz., the question why a group of highly educated men allowed themselves to become so profoundly—and in some cases, so selfdestructively—attached to their “Master” that they believed they owed their very lives to him. Raulff, unfortunately, appears to be more interested in recounting than explaining. What he gives us here is a wonderful collection of portraits and episodes, told with much verve and a healthy dose of postmodern irony. But behind all the stories, the Gestalt of the Circle does not come into focus, and George, the great undead of Raulff’s “Gespenstergeschichte,” does not come to life.

U-Bahn, Mond und Sterne

Almut Hille

SummaryIn the novels Der Himmel unter Berlin by Jaroslav Rudiš, Seltsame Sterne starren zur Erde. Wedding — Pankow 1976/77 by Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Der Mond isst die Sterne auf by Dilek Zaptcioglu and Selam Berlin by Yadé Kara the authors develop poetics of the city from below and above. The figures search for the city’s history and identities below and above the surface. To them they can be found only there since the surface of the city itself is changing very rapidly.Jaroslav Rudiš, often labeled a pop-author, wrote his novel Der Himmel unter Berlin based on e-mails which he sent to his friends in Prague while staying in Berlin. Temporary migrations and temporary residencies become characteristics of a globalised life. What is ›migration literature‹ today due to this development? According to the author of the article the term ›migration literature‹ is not applicable — the novel by Jaroslav Rudiš as well as the novels by Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Dilek Zaptcioglu und Yadé Kara shall be read as Berlin literature.
