The effect of the support (activated carbon or titanium dioxide) on the catalytic activity and selectivity to nitrogen of Pt-Sn catalysts in nitrate reduction was studied. The effects of the preparation conditions and the Pt:Sn atomic ratio were also evaluated. It was observed that the support plays an important role in nitrate reduction and that different preparation conditions lead to different catalytic activities and selectivities. Generally, the catalysts supported on activated carbon were less active but more selective to nitrogen than those supported on titanium dioxide. The monometallic Pt catalyst is active for nitrate reduction only when supported on titanium dioxide, which is explained by the involvement of the support in the reaction mechanism. The catalysts were characterized by different techniques, and significant changes on metal chemical states were observed for the different preparation conditions used. Only metallic Pt and oxidized Sn were observed at low calcination and reduction temperatures, but some metallic Sn was also present when high temperatures were used, being also possible the formation of Pt-Sn alloys.

This study investigates the activity and stability of a Prussian blue analogue (PBA) as an inexpensive anode catalyst for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolysis (PEMWE). While some PBAs have recently been reported to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic electrolytes, the present study focuses on their integration in a PEMWE device. Cobalt hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles were interfaced with an electrically conductive support that withstands the PEMWE anodic conditions, namely Sb-doped SnO2. The OER activity of the composite materials was first verified in liquid electrolytes and then in PEMWE. A promising current density of 50–100 mA cm−2 was reached at 2 V cell voltage. The PBA/Sb–SnO2 anode was stable up to 1.9 V, but showed more and more instability at higher potentials. Increasing leaching rates of Sn and Sb observed above 1.9 V suggest that the material instability above 1.9 V can mainly be assigned to Sb-doped SnO2 conductive support. These results are overall promising for the use of PBAs as catalytic sites at the anode of PEMWE. The study also identifies the need for more active PBAs in order to reach a higher current density at a cell voltage of 1.6–1.9 V, a potential range necessary for an acceptable energy efficiency of the PEMWE.

In this article, the preparation and application of gold and cerium catalysts supported on zirconium-doped mesoporous silica SBA-15 was studied. These materials have been prepared by two different methods and characterized to investigate their textural properties, dispersion of the active phases and oxidation states. Both materials exhibit a marked catalytic activity. The size of the gold nanoparticles is directly related to the CO conversion rate and to the selectivity towards CO2 exhibiting a strong temperature dependence. An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study of the composition and chemical state of the nanoparticles indicates the presence of Au in a metallic state. Transmission electron microscopic micrographs indicate that the best catalyst shows a higher dispersion of Au in spite of its lower gold surface content.
