We examine wavelength conversion for a packet switching router with in-band labels using efficient and cascadable all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) via a low-cost dual-pump SOA scheme. System performance is examined over a 35nm tuning range.

We present a novel simulation tool for optical systems employing in-line nonlinear SOAs, able to correctly estimate the bit error rate even in the presence of significant SOA-induced intersymbol interference.

We analyze the performance of optical burst switches, including physical layer impairments, via the use of Monte Carlo techniques. We compare two designs by investigating the impact of Q-factor degradation on throughput and latency.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a low-cost optical UWB pulse generation method. A gain-switched laser pulse is dispersed by optical fiber and upconverted to the center of the FCC mask using an optical intensity modulator.

We describe a simple characterization technique to experimentally extract the parameters necessary to accurately model four-wave mixing efficiency in semiconductor optical amplifier. Such characterization is important in the modeling and design of wavelength converters.

A novel low-complexity backpropagation scheme based on small-signal approximation, to mitigate nonlinear distortions induced by SOA on modulation constellations is introduced, and proved to be superior to the more complex scheme based on Runge-Kutta.
