Gauging the Differences between Expectation and Systems Support: The Managerial Approach of Adaptive and Perfective Software Maintenance

Ammar Rashid; William Yu Chung Wang; Dan Dorner

Abstract. Differences in the type and nature of tasks insoftware development and maintenance require acareful selection of separate methods and procedures tohandle each task. A great deal of academic andpractical attention has been devoted to studyingmethods of developing software; considerably lessattention has been devoted to studying the managementof software once implemented. Also, current researchhas been focused on the technical side of the softwaremaintenance (e.g., development of models and tools)and completely ignores the managerial side. Thisresearch gap initiates the knowledge niche forresearchers and practitioners to further investigate themanagement issues in the software maintenanceprocess. In this paper, we assimilate previous researchin the software maintenance management area andaddress three major management challenges associatedwith the software maintenance.

Role of Social Computing in the Implementation of a Knowledge City Portal

Ammar Rashid; Kostas S. Metaxiotis; Rashid Kausar

Knowledge Cities fall under a new area of academic research entitled Knowledge-Based Development (KBD), which brings together research in urban development and urban studies and planning with knowledge management and intellectual capital. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of social computing and a promising role it could play in the implementation of Web-based Knowledge City Portal. A collection of academic and practitioner papers/articles related to social computing, web portal, knowledge city and related areas are analyzed and critiqued. Four critical dimensions namely Accessibility, Affordability, Usability, and Functionality are identified and analyzed to form a conceptual implementation model for a Web-based Knowledge City Portal.

Non-parametric optimal service pricing: a simulation study

Asif Muzaffar; Shiming Deng; Ammar Rashid

Abstract In this paper, we study a price discovery algorithm for searching the optimal price for a service with price-sensitive demand. The customer’s response to price is unknown and the customer arrival process follows an arbitrary point process. This algorithm is suitable for new services with no prior knowledge or historical data available. Furthermore, there is no information about objective function as well. We take on a simulation study and discuss the sensitivity and robustness of this procedure with respect to different arrival processes and customer response functions and also provide the comparative statics with simple price learning algorithm. We prove that price discovery algorithm is a better convergent as it reduces stochastic error at each step. The main focus of this research is to provide some guidance for the selection of sample sizes based on the test significance and the measure of its power when actual mean and variance for revenue are unknown.

Exploring links between post adoption operations and process innovation

Ammar Rashid; William Yu Chung Wang

Over the last decade, information systems research has been preoccupied with examining the pre-adoption, use and impact of information technology. A great majority of the research efforts has been focused towards studying the cognitive processes associated with an individuals pre adoption activities, adoption decisions, and initial user behaviours. In recent years, post adoption studies have started to emerge in different literatures. This paper highlights the importance of information technologys post adoption stage and the innovation it can bring in the business processes. Positivist case study is employed to explore the relationship between post adoption operations and process innovation.

Social networks and its impact on knowledge management

Ammar Rashid; William Yu Chung Wang; Kamarul Faizal Hashim

Given the growing interest and popularity of the social network studies at an individual and organizational level, this paper present critical review of literature, identify gaps and appraise current trends and limitations. Nowadays, the topic of social networks is generally viewed from technology perspective; that is to study the adoption and impact of social networking tools and completely ignore the managerial aspect of social networks. In this paper we argue that organization can leverage the power of social networks for performance, growth and eliminate collaboration inefficiencies. This paper also highlights the importance of network analysis at an organizational level and its role in knowledge sharing processes. This paper ends with highlighting the academic and practitioner implications on future research.

Opportunities and Leverage in the Information Technology Post Adoption Stage

Ammar Rashid; William Yu Chung Wang; Felix B. Tan

There exist plethora of research that investigates different topics related to management, use and impact of information technology in the organization. Despite the presence of heaps of research to date, considerably large number of information technology projects does not reap the maximum benefit. This paper provides a critical review of studies related to information technology post adoption stage. It highlights the importance of post adoption stage and assimilates research from different literature to identify the gaps within information systems literature. The paper also highlights the academic and practitioner contributions and implications on the future research.
