The taxonomic position of a Gram-positive coccus, designated strain CAU 28T, isolated from activated sludge foam was determined by using a polyphasic approach. Based on its cellular morphology and the results of biochemical tests, strain CAU 28T was identified tentatively as a member of the genus Lactococcus. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that levels of similarity between strain CAU 28T and the type strains of recognized Lactococcus species ranged from 90.4 to 97.2 %. DNA-DNA hybridization studies showed that strain CAU 28T displayed less than 26.1 % relatedness to the type strains of recognized Lactococcus species. The rep-PCR fingerprints revealed that strain CAU 28T was well separated from reference Lactococcus species. The combined genotypic and phenotypic data indicate that strain CAU 28T represents a novel species of the genus Lactococcus, for which the name Lactococcus chungangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 28T (=KCTC 13185T =CCUG 55099T).

A Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic bacterial strain, designated CAU 1033(T), was isolated from soil and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CAU 1033(T) formed a distinct lineage within the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus drentensis KCTC 13025(T) (similarity 95.9 %). CAU 1033(T) contained MK-7 as the only isoprenoid quinone and iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The cell wall peptidoglycan of strain CAU 1033(T) contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and the major whole-cell sugars were arabinose, sucrose and ribose. The polar lipids were composed of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids, four unidentified aminophospholipids, an unidentified aminolipid, two unidentified glycolipids and another unidentified polar lipid. The DNA G+C content was 41.4 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic data and phylogenetic inference, strain CAU 1033(T) was classified as a representative of a novel species in the genus Bacillus for which the name Bacillus songklensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1033(T) ( = KCTC 13881(T) = CCUG 61889(T)).

A Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated CAU 1183(T), was isolated from marine sand and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. The bacterium grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 8.5 and in the presence of 2% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CAU 1183(T) formed a distinct lineage within the genus Oceanobacillus and exhibited the highest similarity to Oceanobacillus chungangensis CAU 1051(T) (97.6%). The strain contained MK-7 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and anteiso-C15 : 0 was the major cellular fatty acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipid pattern of strain CAU 1183(T) consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and unidentified lipids, including two phospholipids, two glycolipids, a phosphoglycolipid and two lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain CAU 1183(T) should be assigned to a novel species in the genus Oceanobacillus, for which the name Oceanobacillus arenosus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1183(T) ( = KCTC 33037(T) = CECT 8560(T)).

A Gram-staining-positive, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterial strain, CAU 9163(T), was isolated from marine sediment collected in the Republic of Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The novel strain grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 8.0. In phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain CAU 9163(T) formed a hitherto unknown lineage within the order Bacillales, which contains the genera Planomicrobium, Planococcus, Sporosarcina, Rummeliibacillus, Viridibacillus, Lysinibacillus and Bacillus. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the novel strain and any established bacterial species were all <95.7%. The major isoprenoid quinines of strain CAU 9163(T) were MK-8 (65.2%) and MK-7 (22.8%) and the predominant fatty acid was anteiso-C(15:0). The peptidoglycan was of the A4α type and based on L-Lys-D-Asp. The major whole-cell sugars were ribose and glucose. The polar lipid profile mainly consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid and an unidentified polar lipid. The genomic DNA G+C content of the novel strain was 44.3 mol%. These data were sufficient to differentiate the novel strain from established genera in the phylum Firmicutes. Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic evidence, strain CAU 9163(T) represents a novel species in a new genus for which the name Chungangia koreensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Chungangia koreensis is 9163(T) ( = KCTC 13729(T) = CCUG 59778(T)).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, strictly aerobic, non-endospore-forming bacterium, designated CAU 9143T, was isolated from a hydric soil sample collected from Seogmo Island in the Republic of Korea. Strain CAU 9143T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0 and in the presence of 1 % (w/v) NaCl. The phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CAU 9143T belonged to the genus Arthrobacter and was closely related to Arthrobacter ginkgonis SYP-A7299T (97.1 % similarity). Strain CAU 9143T contained menaquinone MK-9 (H2) as the major respiratory quinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two glycolipids and two unidentified phospholipids as the major polar lipids. The whole-cell sugars were glucose and galactose. The peptidoglycan type was A4a (l-Lys-D-Glu2) and the major cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 64.4 mol% and the level of DNA-DNA relatedness between CAU 9143T and the most closely related strain, A. ginkgonis SYP-A7299T, was 22.3 %. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genetic data, strain CAU 9143T represents a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacterpaludis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9143T (=KCTC 13958T,=CECT 8917T).

A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated CAU 1453T, was isolated from soil and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain CAU 1453T grew optimally at 30 °C and at pH 6.5 in the presence of 1 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that CAU 1453T represented a member of the genus Arenimonas and was most closely related to Arenimonas donghaensis KACC 11381T (97.2 % similarity). CAU 1453T contained ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, a phosphoglycolipid, an aminophospholipid, two unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified glycolipids. CAU 1453T showed low DNA-DNA relatedness with the most closely related strain, A. donghaensis KACC 11381T (26.5 %). The DNA G+C content was 67.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, CAU 1453T represents a novel species of the genus Arenimonas, for which the name Arenimonas halophila sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1453T (=KCTC 62235T=NBRC 113093T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile by one single flagellum, dark-orange pigmented and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CAU 1457T, was isolated from marine sediment in the Republic of Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. The isolate grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 6.0 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequences similarity, strain CAU 1457T belonged to the genus Sphingomicrobium and was related most closely to Sphingomicrobium astaxanthinifaciens JCM 18551T (98.2 % similarity). Strain CAU 1457T contained ubiquinone-10 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c/ω6c) as the major cellular fatty acids. Triamine sym-homospermidine was detected as the major compound in the polyamine pattern. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid, four unidentified glycolipids, one unidentified aminophospholipid, two unidentified phospholipids, one unidentified aminolipid and one unidentified lipid. DNA-DNA relatedness between strain CAU 1457T and the closely related strains, Sphingomicrobium astaxanthinifaciens JCM 18551T and Sphingomicrobium aestuariivivum KCTC 42286T were 32.7 and 28.4 %, respectively. The DNA G+C content of strain was 68.8 mol%. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data indicated that strain CAU 1457T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomicrobium, for which the name Sphingomicrobium arenosum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1457T (=KCTC 62233T=NBRC 113094T).
