Spanish Adaptation of the FACES IV Questionnaire: Psychometric Characteristics

The aim of this study was to obtain a culturally adapted Spanish version of the American Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES IV). For this purpose, rigorous procedures were used in the retro-translation process and in the subsequent empirical study. The sampling consisted of 455 university students and a balanced scale of 13 items (α = .87) was obtained; a scale that can be used independently. Moreover, the study was rounded off with a 6-factor model that includes 2 central scales—cohesion and adaptability—and 4 extreme scales—chaotic, rigid, disengaged, and enmeshed—each one with 4 items. All the scales proved to have good psychometric qualities and suitable convergent, concurrent, and content validity, yet it will be necessary to go more deeply into the rigid scale. The construct validity was supported by a confirmatory factorial analysis with sound fit indexes (root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.046, normed fit index [NFI] = 0.94, the comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.97, and the goodness-of-fit index [GFI] = 0.92). In its Spanish version, FACES IV is a useful instrument for family assessment, although further studies need to be carried out so as to confirm the results obtained.

Conflicto interparental, relaciones padres-hijos e impacto emocional en los hijos

Resumen Se analiza la relación entre el conflicto interparental, las relaciones entre padres-hijos y el impacto emocional en estos últimos. A través de un diseño transversal se ha encuestado a 655 adolescentes (374 chicas y 281 chicos). Para la valoración de las variables de interés se ha utilizado una batería de cuestionarios que comprende los siguientes: la Escala de Percepción de los Hijos del Conflicto Interparental (CPIC), el inventario para los Hijos del Comportamiento Parental (CRPBI), y la Escala de Psicopatología Infanto-juvenil (YSR). Se han utilizado correlaciones de Pearson para explorar las asociaciones entre las variables y utilizado un modelo de regresión jerárquica para determinar las variables predictivas del impacto emocional en los hijos. Se encontraron asociaciones estadísticamente significativas (p <.01) entre las variables implicadas con efectos entre valores de 0.30 y 0.46. El modelo de regresión jerárquica explicó el 33% de la varianza y comopredictores principales del estado emocional de los hijos la percepción del conflicto (correlación semiparcial rs-p = 0.33) y la hostilidad de la madre (rs-p =.19). Los resultados obtenidos permiten corroborar la hipótesis planteada en este estudio, dado que la percepción por parte de los hijos de un mayor grado de conflicto interparental y un estilo de comportamiento hostil por parte de la madre para con el hijo muestran asociación estadísticamente significativa con el malestar emocional de este último.

Metric Goodness of the Adult Prosocialness Scale: comparative Study of Italy and Spain

The main goal of the study is to analyze the metric goodness of the Spanish version of the Adult Prosocialness Scale (Caprara, Steca, Zelli, & Capanna, 2005). Analysis of construct and concurrent validity in two similar samples of young adults, a Spanish sample (target of the adaptation) and an Italian sample (source language), revealed the adequacy of the Spanish version of instrument, with adequate fit of the model in the Spanish group, χ2(96) = 405.28, p = .001, RMSEA = .071, CFI = .94, GFI = .93, and the Italian group χ2(97) = 224.5, p = .001, RMSEA = .075, CFI = .91, GFI = .90. The results also replicated the adequacy of the instrument found in the Italian sample, as the configural and metric invariance was verified in both groups. Analyses of benevolent and power values related to prosociality and differences between genders supported the validity of the scale. In short, the present study confirms the adequacy and sensitivity of the instrument to study prosociality in young adults in a Spanish sample.

Psychometric properties of the spanish version of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale IV

Introduction: Building on the expanding cross cultural interest in FACES, the Spanish version of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES IV), aimed at the assessment of the dimensions of cohesion and flexibility of the Circumplex Model, was validated following the authors guidelines. Method: The sample was composed by 665 college students. Besides, FACES II was also used and family communication, satisfaction, stress and strengths were also measured. Results: The results supported its psychometric adequacy. Construct validity, concurrent and discriminant validity of all the scales were confirmed, maintaining the original structure of the instrument, with 6 scales, 4 Unbalanced scales (Disengaged, Enmeshed, Rigid, and Chaotic), and two Balanced scales (Cohesion and Flexibility). Additionally, the ratio scores confirmed the curvilinearity of the model. Conclusion: All the results supported the adequacy of the Spanish version, which is also promising for use in educational settings, in counseling and in research. Findings with the Spanish version of FACES IV are similar to findings in the United States and other countries. Resumen Propiedades psicométricas de la versión española de la Escala de Evaluación de la Adaptabilidad y la Cohesión Familiar. Antecedentes: partiendo del creciente interés en distintas culturas por el FACES, la versión española de la Spanish version of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES IV), dirigida a evaluar las dimensiones de cohesión y flexibilidad del Modelo Circumplejo, fue validada siguiendo las guías del autor. Método: la muestra estuvo compuesta por 665 estudiantes universitarios. Además del FACES IV, también se empleó el FACES II, y la comunicación, satisfacción, estrés y recursos familiares también fueron evaluados. Resultados: los resultados apoyaron su adecuación psicométrica. La validez de constructo, concurrente y discriminante de todas las escalas fue confirmada, manteniendo la estructura original del instrumento con 6 escalas, 4 extremas (Desapego, Apego, Rigidez y Caos) y dos moderadas (Cohesión y Flexibilidad). Las ratios confirmaron la curvilinealidad del modelo. Conclusión: todos los resultados apoyaron la adecuación de la versión española, la cual es prometedora para su uso en contexto educativo, en orientación psicológica y en investigación. Los resultados con la versión española del FACES IV son similares a los encontrados en Estados Unidos y otros países.
