Objectives: To identify and analyze the determining religious factors in the adoption of an active lifestyle through a systematic review. Methods: The research was performed in the LILACS, MEDLINE / PubMed, SciELO, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus and SocINDEX databases using the following descriptors and keywords: “religion”, “religiosity”, “spiritual”, “spirituality”, “physical activity” and “physical exercise”. The selection of articles had the following inclusion criteria: fully available original articles published between 2002 and 2011 in Portuguese and English. Literature reviews, theses, dissertations and monographs were excluded. Results: The sample consisted of ten articles. It could be identified from their analysis that in groups based on faith, holy scriptures and/or sacred teachings, the messages transmitted by the religious leaders and the level of religiosity are the main factors for adopting an active lifestyle. Conclusion: Religiosity appeared as an important aspect for the incorporation of physical activity in one’s life, thus improving their quality of life. n n ndoi:10.5020/18061230.2013.p419

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the perception about pain during walking in elderly with intermittent claudication and how they use religion to overcome the painful symptoms. METHODS: The sample consisted of 10 members of a physical training program with symptoms of intermittent claudication. A profile of the population was drawn, containing sociodemographic and religious data, and an interview based semi-structured interview script was conducted. We used the procedure descriptive statistics for numeric data and statements of the subjects were subjected to Analysis of Qualitative Data (AQUAD) software and analyzed through qualitative analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that the subjects had negative feelings regarding pain when walking, such as anger, sadness and fear. At the same time, they believed that religion and belief in the existence of a Higher Being helped them overcome the pain in the legs. CONCLUSION: The faith and religiosity seem to act as tools to overcome pain during walking of elderly peoples with intermittent claudication.

This study aimed at knowing and analyzing knowledge of children and adolescents admitted in hospitals about cancer/treatment and their feelings and emotions linked to the practice of active videogame in the hospital environment. It is a qualitative research-type study involving fourteen patients aged 7-17, admitted to an onco-hematology pediatric hospital center. The study applied semi-structured interviews, participant observation and field diary to obtain data. Interventions used the X-Box 360 with Kinect sports and dance games. Data were subjected to content analysis. The subjects demonstrated they knew about cancer disease and treatment. Patients pointed out active video game as a possible strategy to counter sadness and boredom because the games provided social interaction and positive feelings and emotions in the hospital environment.
