In this paper, we demonstrate a high-definition 3-liquid-crystal-on-silicon (3-LCOS) home cinema projection system based on RGB laser source modules. Both red and blue laser modules are composed of an array of laser diodes, and the green laser is based on an optically pumped semiconductor laser. The illumination engine is designed to realize high energy efficiency, uniform illumination, and suppression of speckle noise. The presented laser projection system producing 1362 lm D65 light has a volume of about 450×360×160 mm3.

In this paper, we introduce a numerical simulation of a phase detecting surface plasmon resonance (SPR) scheme based on spectral interference. Based on the simulation, we propose a method to optimize various aspects of SPR sensors, which enables better performance in both measurement range (MR) and sensitivity. In the simulation, four parameters including the spectrum of the broadband light source, incident angle, Au film thickness, and refractive index of the prism coupler are analyzed. The results show that it is a good solution for better performance to use a warm white broadband (625-800 nm) light source, a divergence angle of the collimated incident light less than 0.02°, and an optimized 48 nm thick Au film when a visible broadband light source is used. If a near-IR light source is used, however, the Au film thickness should be somewhat thinner according the specific spectrum. In addition, a wider MR could be obtained if a prism coupler with higher refractive index is used. With all the parameters appropriately set, the SPR MR could be extended to 0.55 refractive index units while keeping the sensitivity at a level of 10(-8).

In this study, we investigate methods to optimize the design of a panoramic annular lens (PAL) system. The design details of a PAL surveillance system, an anamorphic PAL surveillance system, a phone camera with a PAL attachment, and a PAL endoscope system are described. All these designs are optimized using a standard optical software package (Zemax). The results combine very good image quality with a modulation transfer function above 0.3, which is within the cutoff frequency of sensor chips.

Based on the principle of non-imaging optics, the illumination system with the laser diode (LD) array is designed for new laser projection system in this paper. Both illumination system designs of the light pipe and flys eye lens array are presented using standard optical design software Zemax, including the shaping design of laser source beam, uniform light system design and the relay lens design. Good performances are achieved in the simulation. Energy efficiencies of two designs are ⪆65% and both of beam uniformities are near to 96% in the illumination system.

The commercialization of visible light communication (VLC) technologies is facing up some barriers, such as high complexity, poor mobility, heterogeneous integration with TCP/IP networks, multiaccess, big size and etc. We introduce a practical engineering VLC system, which can solve some of the problems. Utilizing commercial-off-the-shelf technologies, the complexity and size are reduced. A kind of nonimaging concentrator is used to enhance mobility. We design a new kind of protocol to realize multiaccess and heterogeneous integration with TCP/IP. It is proved that VLC surely have a bright future for commercialization.

In this paper, we design a high power and small volume laser source module using the laser diode array for the laser projector system. This module can efficiently suppress speckle noise by reducing the phase coherence using laser diode array. In addition, we use the rotating diffuser to further disturb the coherence of the lasers for lower speckle noise. The experimental results show that the laser source module and the rotating diffuser can effectively eliminate the speckle noise. This new light module with laser diode array can be used in the laser projection system with high brightness, small volume and low speckle noise.

In this paper, we design a high power and small volume laser projector using the red laser diode, green laser diode, blue laser diode and green fluorescence as light source, which could improve the performance of the projector significantly with longer lifetime than lamps, higher reliability, and larger color gamut. According to the requirement of CIE Standard Illuminant D65 and light output, the power of red laser diode, green laser diode, blue laser diode and green fluorescence were calculated. The energy efficiency of four base-color optical path was also analyzed. It could be concluded that the blue laser and red laser have higher power requirements.
