Developing a frame-based lexicon for the brazilian legal language: the case of the criminal_process frame

Anderson Bertoldi; Rove Luiza de Oliveira Chishman

The FrameNet database has been used for semantic tagging and multilingual lexicon development. This paper describes the initial steps in the development of a lexicographic project that aims to build a legal frame-based lexicon for the Brazilian legal language. First, we discuss the FrameNet lexical analysis methodology. Second, we present the Criminal_process frame for the Brazilian legal system and the methodology we adopted in the development of this frame. Third, we discuss how FrameNet frames and Brazilian legal frames differ and how the semantic tags developed in the scope of this project could be used for semantic tagging and semantic parsing.

This paper describes the manual annotation of a Brazilian Portuguese corpus according to FrameNet paradigm. The resources include the Summ-it corpus, which has already received correference and rethorical structure annotation, the FrameNet database of frames in xml, and the annotation tool SALTO. The corpus has 774 sentences, 512 semantically annotated, totalizing 66,14% of the corpus. This work presents the theoretical and methodological discussion, and the final results obtained.

TRADUZINDO O INTRADUZÍVEL: A TRADUÇÃO DE CASA-GRANDE E SENZALA EM ITALIANO

Anderson Bertoldi

Challenges to the Creation of a Frame-Based Lexicon for the Portuguese Language: A study of the Judgement and Assessing Frames

Anderson Bertoldi; Rove Luiza de Oliveira Chishman

This paper presents a comparative study of Judgment and Assessing frames in English and Portuguese. The aim is to verify the possibility of using the FrameNet frames to construct a lexical database for Brazilian Portuguese. The research corpus is composed by 50 legal documents, totalizing 1.055,535 tokens and 39,108 types. Through a contrastive method the Judgment and Assessing frames were selected and translation equivalents for the English lexical units were established. The points considered in this research were the polysemy and the semantic relations of words. The polysemy is the main difficulty in applying FrameNet frames for Portuguese description.

Improving Legal Ontologies through Semantic Representation of Adjectives

Anderson Bertoldi; Rove Luiza de Oliveira Chishman

The research reported here results from a masters thesis project developed in the scope of SEMANTEC, DIRPI and LOIS projects. The aim of our research was to show what kind of semantic information was carried by adjectives and how this information could improve legal ontologies and legal information retrieval. In this paper we will discuss the main results related to the development of this research. We combine different linguistic theories to approach adjectival semantics. As result of this research, we propose five different adjectival groups. Each group has a specific semantic behavior and can contribute in different ways to legal information retrieval.Humans usually think of a location not as pair of coordinates but rather in a semantic way as place. In this paper, we are presenting a concept to integrate places in a framework for the development of user- centered community platforms. We follow a grassroots approach for collecting places and introduce an ontology-based place model along with concepts for mapping geographic coordinates to places. Furthermore, a place cloud is established as an intuitive user interface for localization, place visualization, and the retrieval of multimedia contents based on places. The prototypical implementation of our concepts proofs that places are well suited for personalization and the semantic annotation of multimedia contents in a social environment.
