Establishing measures to evaluate the level of service (LOS) at airport passenger terminals is of interest to airlines and airport operators. Airport LOS has been evaluated at individual airports, but no standard method or reporting system exists. Airport passenger terminal LOS and capacity have been research topics over the past two decades. More recently, studies have been initiated to identify the passenger terminal problem in general and capacity and service measures in particular. In 1986, FAA responded to concerns about an inadequate understanding of passenger terminal capacity constraints by commissioning TRB to study ways to measure airport capacity. This study recognized that the capacity of any given airport facility cannot be evaluated without defining acceptable LOS values. Currently, however, little agreement exists on analysis methods. No universally accepted way exists to measure LOS for airport terminal buildings. In this regard, various approaches developed by different agencies and researchers are reviewed. This review is useful for professionals interested in applying one of the methods previously developed but not having access to all published information, especially the new approaches. The intent of this review is to motivate new research on the subject, which would facilitate the integration of various existing methods or the development of new approaches.

More than 80% of the Brazilian international trade is by sea, the port assumes an unquestionable importance in the process of national economic growth. Also considered as a factor for socioeconomic development to region nearby. In this context, the necessity to evaluate the port efficiency is essential to assure the competitiveness of the national products on external markets. This paper will analyze the two main approaches of evaluation of port efficiency, in special the Stochastic Frontiers and the Data Envelopment Analysis. It will show the main evidences of the performance of the existing techniques and which is the better for the case of the port efficiency. The Stochastic Frontiers presented as main advantage the fact to compare the results with technical parameters or normalized, however it only analyze one product for time. The Data Envelopment Analysis has as advantage, the possibility to analyze multiples products, however with a reduced number of samples.

EnglishThis paper proposes an approach to obtain a global index of safety in airport runways, with criteria based on safety events. Events were weighted based on the cardinal data extracted from the perception of an expert on safety risks, using the Swing Weights method. The multi-attribute value theory to group the different criteria in a global index was employed to analyze the evolution of the safety levels. This approach was applied to the operations of the Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport. Trend analyses were done to highlight the most urgent indicators to carry out actions to increase the safety levels. The results were considered to be consistent, contributing to the continuity of its practical application in the management of airport safety.

ABSTRACT This paper presenting as contribution a model for the evaluation, control, and improvement of airport safety by analyzing different operational events. This model is based on multicriteria methods, in particular, the entropy and TOPSIS methods. It allows to operationalize the evaluation of the airport ramp safety performance in contexts of scarce information about the weights of each criterion, and where the absence of personal judgments in the weighting process is considered important. Operational events were used to develop the criteria. In addition, an application was conducted and the data from airport ramp safety events were used to identify trends, diagnose problems, support the planning of actions, and provide a basis for allocating resources for prevention of catastrophic accidents and improvement of safety. This application was used to validate the model. It was concluded that the airport ramp safety did not maintain a trend of continuous improvement and the proposed model allowed the identification of trends, of criteria with low performance, and the realization of recommendations for improvinge airport safety. Keywords: Safety indicators, TOPSIS, entropy, airport.

The focus of this paper is to investigate arrival processing facilities at airports under different scenarios. A simulation model was developed and the international arrivals areas at Rio de Janeiro International Airport, Brazil, were selected as case studies, where 100 passengers were scrutinised at the arrival components. The validation of the model was conducted in comparison with real system results. Nine combinations of conveyor belt dimensions, waiting time at the baggage claim area, the percentage of passengers with two bags, and the number of passport control desks were tested. The results indicate that the level of service offered could be significantly improved by managerial decisions related to the number of passport control desks and baggage loading at the carousel.

This work applies computational simulation concepts in order to evaluate the quality and productivity of logistics systems of the import cargo terminal at Campinas/Viracopos International Airport. The logistic system was simulated by use of ARENA software, which model presented consistent results, by comparison with real data, collected through field visits. The simulation results indicate that changes on the speed of storage belts and the adoption of frequency placement stock location strategy could significantly improve the indicators of waiting time (at the entrance and exit of storage), total storage time and storage productivity.

Abstract Blood Bank operations are a key component of the healthcare system all over the world. Therefore an efficient management flow among blood bank center and hospitals are important to save patients’ lives. In the other hand, information flow among partners is an important activity that enhances an effective operation of blood distribution. However, information flow depends directly from identification technology and infrastructure to sharing collected events. The aim of this research was to propose the optimal combination of a intelligent shelf with RFID to create a new communication between physical and information events in order to supply blood bags in the hospital context.
