Mobile telemedicine system application for telediagnosis using multimedia messaging service technology

Andik Setyono; Md. Jahangir Alam; Chikkannan Eswaran

The purpose of this paper is to design and implement mobile telemedicine system applications for telediagnosis using Multimedia Message Service MMS technology. The development process consists of two components, namely client-side and server-side applications. On the client-side, adapted compression and splitting techniques are used to perform mobile multimedia computing and to enhance the capability of MMS technology in message delivery. On the server-side, merging and decompressing techniques as well as mobile telemedicine applications are developed and implemented which are required for telediagnosis. The proposed techniques on the client and server sides ensure that the quality of data is preserved which is critical for accomplishing the diagnosis process. The experimental results show that the proposed framework can be used to develop a practical mobile telemedicine system.

Andik Setyono; Md. Jahangir Alam; Raed Ali Al Saqour

The growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including mobile technology, such as hand phone, PDA, notebook etc., is becoming faster day by day. Those technologies have already become an essential part of our every day life. These technologies are supported by many low-cost facilities, such as calling capabilities, SMS, MMS, playing games, browsing internet, etc. These low-cost technologies can be used to develop a mobile application. Many applications have already been developed using these facilities. This paper analyzes the behaviour of the algorithms of the MMS framework in message delivery and it also simulates an application which is developed to study the algorithms and the methods for sending and receiving MMS. The simulation results can be installed on a mobile phone, then it can send MMS to another mobile phone number and also to email server. The outcome of the proposed research indicates a potential development of mobile and internet application using MMS framework.

Andik Setyono; Md. Jahangir Alam; Chikkannan Eswaran

MMS is a sophisticated multimedia messaging service which can be used to send all forms of multimedia messages. MMS can also be used to stream audio and video files in mobile environment. In this paper, we propose the architecture, algorithm and mobile streaming system application to support a mobile telemedicine system using MMS technology. With the developed system, the doctor can perform the diagnosis without the need for staying at the hospital. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system performs better compared to the conventional MMS for streaming audio and video files.

An Adaptive Web-based Framework for Mobile Telemonitoring System

Andik Setyono; Hanny Haryanto; Erna Zuni Astuti

Mobile long distance monitoring system using web-based will be deliberated as one of the primary industry in the near future. This paper focuses on the development of the healthcare service for telemonitoring system using an adaptive web-based framework with several parameters at the same time. The proposed system is used to make easy the patient and physician for accessing healthcare system. It tries to combine many functions in healthcare services for long distance monitoring system. Physiological parameters are used such as blood pressure, blood sugar, respiration, heartbeat, pulse, temperature will be received by the system then it is sent to the clinic server immediately. All of these parameters can be inputted by patients themselves while the patients are far from the clinical environment and forward to the physician for further diagnosis and medical treatment. The advantages of the proposed system are the patient will be easy to access the system through internet and easy to connect the physician from a remote area. Smartphone with multimedia features and internet connection in mobile environment can be used to perform mobile computing anywhere and anytime. It keeps real-time recording and monitoring of physiology parameters of the patients at lowest cost and at home. The physiology parameters of patient are increased to be multimedia data. By using the good quality of the multimedia data, the physician will be more precise to perform diagnosis and medical treatment to the patient. The proposed framework can be used to develop a practical web-based mobile telemonitoring system in mobile environment.

An Adaptive Multimedia Messaging Service Framework for Mobile Telemedicine System

Andik Setyono

This paper presents an adaptive MMS framework to build a mobile telemedicine system for sending multimedia messages and also for streaming audio and video files. With the proposed framework, the capability of MMS can be increased to send and receive multimedia files of larger sizes without degrading the quality of data which is not possible with the present MMS system. This feature is particularly important for telemedicine environment as good quality of multimedia data is required to accomplish accurate medical diagnosis. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms the existing MMS system with regard to the file size that can be transmitted and also with regard to the quality of data. The modified MMS framework is adaptive in the sense that it allows transmission of different sizes and types of multimedia messages. This framework can form the basis for developing a practical mobile telemedicine system.

Development and Implementation of Compression and Split Techniques for Multimedia Messaging Service Applications

Andik Setyono; Chikkannan Eswaran

 Abstract—MMS is a mobile messaging system that can be used for sending multimedia messages such as text, image, audio, video and a combination of them. This message can be sent to one or many mobile phones or external servers such as email and fax servers. In this paper, we present compression and splitting techniques for enhancing the capability of MMS technology. With the enhanced technology, one can send large files of multimedia messages without any degradation in the quality of the data which is not possible with the existing MMS technology. The developed techniques are tested using images with JPEG format. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system outperforms the conventional MMS in handling large data files. The modified MMS presented in this paper serves as a basis for developing practical internet applications. can trade off file size against the output image quality. We use the split technique to facilitate the delivery of multimedia messages if the compressed file is still too large to be sent directly using MMS. Though usage of split technique requires a fairly high cost as it involves payment for each individual split file, this technique is essential if one wants to send large multimedia files without any degradation in the quality of data. In this paper, we present a systematic procedure for implementing the MMS technology for sending images with JPEG format by using compression and split techniques. The proposed method is suitable for the development of internet applications for transmitting and displaying large size images without affecting the quality of the image. The rest of the paper is organized as follows: Section II discusses data compression and split message techniques. The proposed framework of the MMS system and its description are presented in Section III. Implementation and evaluation details are presented in Section IV and finally conclusion and future work are given in Section V.

The Development and Implementation of a Multimedia Messaging Service for an Enhanced Mobile Telemedicine System

Andik Setyono; Md. Jahangir Alam; Chikkannan Eswaran

This paper presents an algorithm and architechture to enhance the performance of a mobile telemedicine system using the existing multimedia messaging service (MMS). With the proposed algorithm, the capacity of the MMS can be increased so that the mobile telemedicine system is able to send and receive a large content of multimedia messages using mobile phone devices which is not possible with the conventional MMS. This paper also presents the complete architechture of the mobile telemedicine system which can form the basis for building a practical mobile telemedicine system. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional MMS with regard to the file size that can be transmitted without degrading the quality of the data which is important for medical diagnosis in a telemedicine environment.

Study and design framework for e-Dengue teleconsultation system

Andik Setyono; Md. Jahangir Alam; Beatrice Ann Maria Soosai

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in medical world has been widely used. The telemedicine system will be growing rapidly in accordance with the growth of the ICT. The use of technology can provide an easiness to patient to connect the doctor or nurse for getting medical treatment without visiting the hospital. In this paper, we propose a framework for developing e-Dengue teleconsultation system. It is built to allow the user (patient) to get early concern about the disease and performing teleconsultation via Internet or mobile phone. The developed system is expected to monitor dengue fever outbreak for reducing the number of dengue patient. The proposed framework can be used to develop practical telemedicine systems in future.
