ABSTRACT – (Phanerogamic hydrophytes from the temporary swampy environments of coastal plains ofnorthern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil). A floristic inventory of phanerogamic hydrophytes from the temporaryswampy environments of coastal plains of northern of Rio de Janeiro State was made. The botanical voucherswere collected in 27 expeditions between September/1998 and July/2001. They were herborized and identified bythe traditional methodology. The exsicatae were deposited in the UNIRIO herbarium (HUNI). One hundred andthirteen taxa, distributed among 40 families were found. The environment analyzed could be floristically characterizedby the Cyperaceae, represented by 23 taxa (ca. 20%), followed by Fabaceae and Onagraceae (seven taxa), Poaceae(six taxa), Asteraceae and Scrophulariaceae (five taxa) and Apiaceae, Lentibulariaceae and Polygonaceae (four 1 Laboratorio Integrado de Sistematica e Palinologia de Hidrofitas Vasculares, Departamento de Ciencias Naturais, Universidadedo Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), Rua Frei Caneca, 94, CEP 20211-040 Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil ([email protected])

Over the hills and far away: New plant records for the Guayana Shield in Brazil

Rafael Gomes Barbosa-Silva; Paulo H. Labiak; André dos Santos Bragança Gil; Renato Goldenberg; Fabián A. Michelangeli; Gustavo Martinelli; Marcus A. Nadruz Coelho; Daniela C. Zappi

The Guayana Shield is one of the oldest geological formations in South America, ranging from southern Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas to the extreme north of the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Roraima. Because of its ancient origin and isolation from other mountain ranges in South America, it harbors a rich flora with high levels of endemism. Recent expeditions to remote areas in the Brazilian portion of the Guayana Shield generated many new herbarium collections. Through these efforts, we report the first records for Brazil of 57 species and infraspecific taxa of vascular plants. In most cases, the taxa are narrowly distributed and were previously known from nearby populations in other countries. In other cases, however, the new Brazilian records expand considerably the known geographical distributions of the taxa.

Cyperaceae is a cosmopolitan family with over 5,000 species, which are often found in wet habitats. In this study we found 31 hydrophylic species of Cyperaceae, belonging to 10 genera (Ascolepis, Calyptrocarya, Cyperus, Eleocharis, Fimbristylis, Fuirena, Lipocarpha, Pycreus, Rhynchospora and Scleria), that occur in the Araguaia River Basin, located mainly within the Brazilian Cerrado (savanna). Short descriptions, geographic distribution, illustrations, identification keys and comments are presented.

André dos Santos Bragança Gil; Volker Bittrich; Maria do Carmo Estanislau do Amaral

Abstract. During the preparation of a taxonomic revision of Neomarica, it was found that seven species required new combinations. Based on studies of morphological features from protologues, type specimens, additional herbarium specimens, and observations in the field and of cultivated plants, these seven new combinations are here presented.
