This paper analyzes the control structure of Brazilian public companies at the end of 1998. We show a high degree of ownership concentration. Even when there is no majority shareholder, the largest one owns a significant portion of the voting capital, and the company is, on average, controlled by its three largest shareholders. We also conclude that the utilization of pyramid structures does not appear to be an effort to avoid the one share-one vote rule in Brazilian companies.

Value-at-risk and Extreme Returns in Asian Stock Markets

André Luiz Carvalhal da Silva; V Beatriz

The purpose of this paper is to use the extreme value theory to analyze ten Asian stock markets, identifying which type of extreme value asymptotic distribution better fits historical extreme market events. Understanding the influence of extreme market events is of great importance for risk managers. Our empirical tests indicate that the return distributions are not characterized by normality and that the minima and the maxima of the return series may be satisfactorily modeled within an extreme value framework. The average waiting time for an index to present a daily return below/above a specific threshold is generally larger for Asian major markets than for Asian emerging markets. We also compute VaR estimates using extreme value theory and compare the results with the empirical and normal VaR estimates. The results suggest that the extreme value method of estimating VaR is a more conservative approach to determining capital requirements than traditional methods.

Myopic Loss Aversion in Brazilian Open Retirement Funds

Eduardo F. L. de Melo; André Luiz Carvalhal da Silva

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the relationship between withdrawals from Brazilian open retirement funds, portfolio composition (fixed income or equity) and frequency of statement sending (monthly, quarterly, semiannually or annually). Our results indicate that equity retirement plans present a lower withdrawal index when compared to that of fixed income plans. Furthermore, the higher the statement sending frequency, the lower the withdrawals from open retirement plans. However, withdrawals from equity retirement plans tend to increase when statements are sent to investors more frequently. These phenomena can be explained by behaviorist theories, such as the concept of myopic loss aversion. In a context where loss aversion is present, the more frequently the investor evaluates his or her portfolio, or the shorter the investment horizon, the less attractive he or she will find investment in assets with a high rate of return and risk, such as equities. This behavior occurs not only regarding short-term investments, but also traditional long-term assets such as equity retirement plans.
