Integral Constructivism and Dynamic Systems in Psychotherapy Processes

Michael J. Mahoney; Andre Marquis

This article presents a brief overview of the metatheory of integral constructivism, highlighting important convergences among constructivist, dynamic systems, integral, object relations, self-psychology, and intersubjective approaches to the practice of psychotherapy. The roles of relationships, emotionality, and perturbations in the client-therapist bond are emphasized. Complex nonlinear dynamics are inherent to life organization and to therapeutic process.

Objective To investigate the psychosocial etiology of physical frailty by examining the influence of chronic stress and perceived control. Method Using population-based samples of older adults from the Health and Retirement Study, this study employed structural equation modeling in cross-sectional (N = 5,250) and longitudinal (N = 2,013) samples to estimate the effects of chronic stress and socioeconomic status (SES) on baseline frailty and change in frailty status over 4 years and the extent to which perceived control mediates or moderates effects of chronic stress. Results Perceived control fully mediated effects of chronic stress and partially mediated effects of SES on both baseline frailty and change in frailty. Multigroup analyses revealed that the mediating role of perceived control was consistent across age, gender, and racial/ethnic subgroups. There was no evidence to support a moderating role of perceived control in the chronic stress and frailty relationship. Discussion Findings provide novel evidence for a mediating role of perceived control in pathways linking SES and chronic stress to frailty, further underscoring the importance of psychosocial constructs to the development and progression of frailty in older adults.

Perceptions of Counseling Integration: A Survey of Counselor Educators

Andre Marquis; Deborah Hudson; Mike Tursi

Counselor educators were surveyed in order to assess their knowledge of integrative counseling approaches, their views regarding the importance of such approaches, and how much emphasis on integrative counseling is given in their counseling courses. A large majority of participants reported that integration in counseling is very important and that they emphasize it in their teaching of counseling theories and/or methods courses. Implications of these findings are discussed, including suggestions for counselor educators and counseling

Effects of Experiential Focusing-Oriented Dream Interpretation

Kuei-An Kan; Janice Miner Holden; Andre Marquis

This two-part study investigated the effects of a particular approach to dream interpretation. In the first part, the Dream Interpretation Effects Questionnaire (DIEQ) was developed to assess both quantitatively and qualitatively seven specific effects of Experiential Focusing-oriented dream interpretation. In the second part, the DIEQ was used along with a structured interview in a pretest-posttest control group design to examine the effects of Experiential Focusing-oriented dream interpretation. The results were, first, that the DIEQ proved to be highly reliable and, second, that Experiential Focusing-oriented dream interpretation demonstrated significant results. This study offers support for Gendlin’s assertion that an Experiential Focusing approach to dream interpretation facilitates constructive psychological change for the dreamer.
