Land-based discharges of marine debris: From local to global regulation

This article outlines the major regulatory requirements involved in the control of land-based discharges of marine debris, and reviews the main developments in the process towards more appropriate international controls of such discharges.

Marine pollution from land-based sources: Towards a global approach

Abstract Marine pollution from land-based sources (LBS) always has very much been seen as a regional problem requiring regional solutions. It is more and more recognized, however, that regional approaches can provide solutions only if they are supplemented by an adequate global strategy. This recognition is in particular reflected in the preparations of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). This contribution will provide an overview of the reasons for this development and of the main elements of a possible future global strategy.
