The specific characteristics of online education require of the student engagement and autonomy, factors which are related to motivation for learning. This study investigated students’ motivation in virtual learning environments (VLEs). For this, it used the Teaching and Learning Strategy and Motivation to Learn Scale in Virtual Learning Environments (TLSM-VLE). The scale presented 32 items and six dimensions, three of which aimed to measure the variables of autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and demotivation. The participants were 572 students from the Brazilian state of Parana, enrolled on higher education courses on a continuous education course. The results revealed significant rates for autonomous motivational behavior. It is considered that the results obtained may provide contributions for the educators and psychologists who work with VLEs, leading to further studies of the area providing information referent to the issue investigated in this study.

This study aimed to build and to gather evidence of validity for a scale of teaching, learning and motivational strategies for learning in online learning environments (EEAM-AVA). To investigate evidence for the validity of the scale, the internal structure and dimensions that emerged during this study were considered. Participating in the survey were 572 students enrolled on courses in mediated virtual learning environments. The research instrument was built using a scale of forty five items. The analysis of the data collected showed a structure of five dimensions, all with acceptable levels of inner consistency, indicating the validity of the scale and its psychometric properties. Additional studies to revise and improve the items presented on the scale were recommended. It is hoped that the results may be of benefit for educators and psychologists who research questions investigated in this study.

The motivation in the school context is a much discussed theme in the contemporaneity of education in different places and cultures. The present study dealt with the motivation construct in the light of the Self Determination Theory and sought to evaluate the motivation to learn from the first years of elementary school in two different cultural realities: Brazil and Chile. A total of 528 children participated in the study, of which 268 were Brazilian and 260 were Chilean who answered two questionnaires on motivation. The method used was for descriptive data analysis with survey designs and correlational. The results showed that most of the children in the two contexts investigated were motivated to learn. The discussion of the results considered the educational implications of the two cultural realities.
