Archibald Alison’s Essays on the Nature and Principles of Taste (1790) remained long neglected after their first release. They were rediscovered only twenty years later, thanks to a review by Francis Jeffrey published on the «Edinburgh Review» in 1811, which suddenly improved their fame and circulation. This paper aims at pointing out retrospectively the reasons for that prolonged indifference, considering if and how much Alison’s aesthetic theory and his emotivistic reductionism could sound interesting and acceptable for an eighteenth-century English reader.

Art and philosophy apparently reign over two distinct dominions: fiction and truth. Nonetheless, in the historiography of ideas ‒ from Shaftesbury to Vico, from Heidegger to Gadamer ‒ the two disciplines have often been paired as capable of unveiling the reality of things. This study aims at showing the relationship between art and philosophy on the subject of deception, questioning whether art, an evident deception, canshed some light on philosophical truths as much as philosophy can reveal the hidden deceptions of art, regarding its forms, contents and ontological status.
