CORAL: Implementing an Open-Source ERM System

Andrea Imre; Eric Hartnett; C. Derrik Hiatt

The presenters focused on the benefits and challenges of implementing an open-source electronic resource management (ERM) system called Centralized Online Resource Acquisitions and Licensing (CORAL) at their libraries. Originally developed by the University of Notre Dames Hesburgh Libraries, CORAL offers libraries the option to reorganize ERM workflows and collect information about their electronic resources into one central place without having to commit funding for new software from the ever-shrinking library budget. CORAL currently includes four modules: Organizations, Resources, Licensing, and Usage Statistics. In addition to the challenges that are faced in any ERM system implementation, such as collecting and preparing data and training staff, issues specific to using an open-source application in an academic library were presented.

Not Just Drifting: Checking Online Serial Issue Availability

Kitti Canepi; Andrea Imre

A 2009 survey conducted by librarians at Southern Illinois University Carbondale revealed that librarians want an automated process for verifying online serial access. Rather than just waiting for automation to arrive, 51 percent of the 237 respondents were systematically checking access to subscribed online journals. Unfortunately, 45 percent of respondents had never heard of ONIX (ONline Information eXchange) for Serials, the group of XML formats for sharing serial product and subscription information that holds promise for enabling this automation. Presenters shared the survey results and noted what needs to be done next to put ONIX for Serials into practice.

The Future is Flexible, Extensible, and Community-Based: Stories of Successful Electronic Resources Management

Andrea Imre; Steve Oberg; Scott Vieira; Lori Duggan

Centralized Online Resources Acquisitions and Licensing (CORAL) is an open source electronic resources management system originally developed by the University of Notre Dame Hesburgh Libraries. The CORAL system consists of five modules designed to manage the library electronic resources life-cycle, including licensing and contact information, procurement and activation workflow, usage statistics, and the storage of documentation. CORAL was designed as a flexible and customizable management system, with the ability to utilize each module independently or as a suite to maintain the electronic resources management needs of individual institutions. Scott Vieira of Rice University, Steve Oberg of Wheaton College, and Andrea Imre of Southern Illinois University Carbondale present on the functionality of CORAL and demonstrate the system’s flexibility and extensibility in managing library electronic resources.

Doing More With Less: Increasing the Value of the Consortial Catalog

Elizabeth J. Cox; Stephanie J. Graves; Andrea Imre; Cassie Wagner

Abstract Purpose This case study describes how one library leveraged shared resources by defaulting to a consortial catalog search. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a case study approach to describe steps involved in changing the catalog interface, then assess the project with a usability study and an analysis of borrowing statistics. Findings The authors determined the benefit to library patrons was significant and resulted in increased borrowing. The usability study revealed elements of the catalog interface needing improvement. Practical implications Taking advantage of an existing resource increased the visibility of consortial materials to better serve library patrons. The library provided these resources without significant additional investment. Originality/value While the authors were able to identify other libraries using their consortial catalog as the default search, no substantive published research on its benefits exists in the literature. This chapter will be valuable to libraries with limited budgets that would like to increase patron access to materials.
