This paper focuses the prolonged stay of adult sons in the middle-class parents home, linked to work perspective. Specific social factors pertaining to the world of urban middle-class families can lead to the stay extending of adult sons within the family home. Secondly, there are different representations of the work world expressed by parents and their children. The parents representation is based on the perception of stability and links with employers. In contrast, their children present short-term perspectives and provisional social experiences, characteristic of modern life. So, family life may express a context of ambiguity which allows the separation postponed of parents and sons.

Based on the theory of the indissoluble link, this study aims to validate the scale Father and Mother as a Couple scale (FMC), addressed to marital relations between parents as perceived by their sons and daughters, referring to various components of this construct. The PMC, consisting of eleven pairs of items, and distinguishing father and mother in the same variable, is part of a broader instrument, the Questionnaire on Parents as a Couple (QPC), comprising 60 items overall. The non-probability sample consists of 1,612 youth, 678 men and 934 women, between 18 and 29 years. The analyses presented empirical evidence favoring the validation of this scale as consisting of a single dimension which has, however, been considered as comprising the fi rst principal component interpreted as explicit, and the second one as implicit, both in the father and mother subscales with Cronbachs alphas, respectively, .85 and .86. The Mobius strip is proposed for modeling the explicit-implicit dimensionality.

The present work concerns the articulation among different generations in the contemporary context. It discusses the constitution of intergenerational bonds, analyzing subjective and relational changes, in a context of accelerated social transformations. Generational differences are highlighted, since they are the basis of the socio-cultural transmission process. Different theoretical approaches of the generation concept are confronted with the category of age, from the perspective of psycho-social studies. It emphasizes experience subjective character and it discusses distances and proximities of people with different ages. It considers that contemporary intergenerational bonds are currently structured in a different way. The intergenerational identification process, based on the ideal of youth, stemming from the homogenization of social values, is analyzed.

In this study we discuss the process of generational transmission of profession in the family. Fifteen individuals were interviewed, from three generations, who had followed the same profession. Participants were from five families – lawyers, doctors, musicians, acting teachers, psychoanalysts. From the content analysis of the interviews the following categories emerged: naturalization of the process of career choice; need for differentiation; the weight attributed to the family name; mythical family figure; freedom of choice in contemporaneity; values transmitted in daily life; loyalty to the love for the profession. In this work the three former categories are presented. We conclude that repetition in the choice of profession in the family is perceived as a naturalized process, highlighting the responsibility in the transmission of the family name associated to the profession, the need for differentiation and for appropriation of the family legacy, while preserving individuality.

Adoptive Parenting: Contextualizing the Choice The present study is part of a wider investigation on the experience of parents related to parenting and the filiation in the adolescence of their stepchildren. It was analyzed which intersubjective emotional issues, belonging to the early formation of the affective ties would be updated during this time of the foster family cycle. Specifically, this study aimed to explore issues concerning the motivations for choice of parenting by adoption and the place of the family network to support the decision-making. There was a field study, based on semi-structured interviews with 10 independent subjects of middle and upper classes of the population in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It was found that there is a hierarchy of preference in the process of having a child, making the adoption a secondary choice, and the extended family has no direct interference in the decision-making by adoption.

The present paper discusses the results of a research that had as its main purpose to analyze the life projects of individuals belonging to different generations within the last decades, with special emphasis on the role played by establishing a family in such projects. Speeches of 20 individuals (10 men and 10 women) from two generations were analyzed. The study pointed out that the profound contemporary sociocultural changes have led to increasing individualism in the relationships, and consequently have altered the way people engage in building their life courses. Two things have been occurring simultaneously. On the one hand, life courses are being individualized and previous standards are being broken, a phenomenon linked to the reduction of gender asymmetries and to the questioning of the institutions. On the other hand, the family model based on marital stability is being repelled. Due to the instability of love relationships, children are gaining importance in the structuring of the idea of a family.

This article is part of a broader research on the parent-child bond in late adoption. The authors interviewed ten independent subjects – three men and seven women, who adopted children older than two years – and assessed the results using the content analysis method. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of the adaptation period in late adoption, and the repercussions of the previous child history the construction of the parent-child bond. Among the main challenges reported during this period, the authors highlight the aggressive behavior of the child; trouble dealing with rules and authority; lack of legal security; school delays; and problems adapting to family routine, all of which seem to be related to the previous experiences of the child. The way in which parents embraced hardships, bridging past and present in order to rebuild the lost family environment, was reported as having critical importance in the construction and maintenance of the parent-child bond.
