Bei zahlreichen Operationen am Herzen und Eingriffen an den grosen Gefasen ist es notwendig, Herz und Lunge vom naturlichen Kreislauf abzukoppeln und zeitweise stillzulegen. In der Regel wird bei offenen und koronar-chirurgischen Eingriffen die Herz- und Lungenfunktion von einer externen Herz-Lungen-Maschine (HLM) ubernommen. Dieser Vorgang wird auch als extrakorporale Zirkulation (EKZ) oder kardiopulmonaler Bypass bezeichnet.

During cardiac surgery and interventions on the large vessels, it is often necessary to disconnect the heart and lungs from the natural circulatory system and to stop them from working temporarily. When open heart surgery or coronary interventions are carried out, the heart and lung function is usually taken over by an external heart-lung machine (HLM). This procedure is also referred to as extracorporeal circulation (ECC) (Sect. 32.2) or cardiopulmonary bypass. The function and technical details of HLMs are decribed in this chapter.
