Concatenated FEC experiment over 5000 km long straight line WDM test bed

Andrej B. Puc; Frank Kerfoot; Adrian Simons; David L. Wilson

A concatenated forward error correction (FEC) code yielded 10-dB coding gain in a straight line laboratory experiment over a 5000-km optically amplified test bed. We used this margin to reduce power per channel, and thus nonlinearities, allowing us to demonstrate channel spacings as close as 0.13 nm for 2.5 Gbit/s transmission.

We present a performance study of a forward error correction (FEC) code using theoretical models, Monte-Carlo computer simulations, and a long-haul WDM transmission experiment. With a 14% redundancy code, the Q-factor was increased by 6.2 dB for both linear and non-linear impairments.

We investigate performance limits of forward error correction codes in optically-amplified fiber channels with asymmetric channel statistics. We show that the binary symmetric channel approximation underestimates the maximum coding gain achievable in fiber communications.

We demonstrate the first S-band long-haul WDM transmission using a cascade of dispersion compensating lumped Raman amplifiers. Twenty NRZ channels, spanning the entire S-band, were transmitted over 10 spans of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) (867 km) at 10.67 Gb/s, each achieving BER<10/sup -12/ without FEC.

Forward error correction (FEC) techniques in long-haul optical transmission systems

The use of forward error correction (FEC) provides significant coding gain, which has been used to demonstrate error-free transmission under severely-errored operating conditions, with high spectral efficiency, over distances exceeding 10,000 km, and at high bit rates. Recent experiments using FEC have demonstrated aggregate transmission capacity exceeding 2 Tb/s. FEC-coded transmission can tolerate a lower optical SNR on the line, which in turn reduces impairments induced by nonlinearities, with the net effect being an increase in the Q/sup 2/-factor when signal power is reduced.

Measurements of S-band to C-band SRS interaction over standard single-mode fiber using a cascade of lumped Raman and erbium amplifiers

Andrej B. Puc; Frederic Barthelemy; Michel W. Chbat; Hyunchin Kim

Summary form only given. A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown. Sixteen channels in the S-band were transmitted over 3 spans of single mode fibre, for a total length of 280 km, using four dispersion-compensating S-band lumped Raman amplifiers. The S-band WDM signals were multiplexed and de-multiplexed with the C-band WDM signals at each repeater. The C-band erbium doped fiber amplifiers were operated in constant gain mode in order to minimize the tilt induced by the EDFAs.
