So now we have MPs calling for a return to salaried nursing students (News April 12). This sounds suspiciously like a backdoor, short-term response to the severe shortages of nurses.

It is a crying shame to learn that schools have allowed rostered placements to occur over the holiday season (News November 3). It certainly appears that such schools neither care about students nor are bothered about the issue. It certainly gives lie to the idea that nursing students are full-time students. The latter do not work on holidays as such unless by choice.

I am a Project 2000 student and read Nursing Standards editorial (April 23) with interest. Its not that Project 2000 has failed as an education system but its ideals and spirit have not been practised in their entirety.
