In this paper we describe a framework to increase the accessibility and reuse of objects stored in digital repositories. In many cases digital repositories are created with little consideration to the wider information environment, or the extension of the repository to items beyond the initial collection. The CMES framework emphasizes providing a structure for creating appropriate content models, selecting appropriate metadata schemas, and the need for a modular approach to the creation of a user interface.

The status of the new media, interactive and performance art context appears to complicate our ability to follow conventional preservation approaches. Documentation of digital art materials has been determined to be an appropriate means of resolving associated difficulties, but this demands high levels of expressiveness to support the encapsulation of the myriad elements and qualities of content and context that may influence value and reproducibility. We discuss a proposed Vocabulary for Preserved New Media Works, a means of encapsulating the various information and material dimensions implicit within a work and required to ensure its ongoing availability.

For securing digital longevity, the processes of preservation planning and evaluation are fundamentally implicit and share similar complexity. Means are required for the identification, documentation and association of those properties of data, representation and management mechanisms that in combination lend value, facilitate interaction and influence the preservation process. These properties may be almost limitless in terms of diversity, but are integral to the establishment of classes of risk exposure, and the planning and deployment of appropriate preservation strategies. We present PORRO, an ontology based approach for documenting objects, repositories and risk information, intended to support preservation decision making and evaluation.
