Steady-State Visually Evoked Potential topography associated with a visual vigilance task

SummaryThis paper describes data which demonstrate a correlation between the magnitude of the Steady-State Visually Evoked Potential (SSVEP) and visual vigilance. The SSVEP was recorded from 64 scalp sites and elicited by a 13Hz uniform visual flicker presented continuously while subjects undertook a visual vigilance task. Fifteen right-handed males were required to view three times a series of 180 geometrical shapes comprising a sequence of 60 squares, 60 circles and a further 60 squares. Each viewing of the 180 shapes constituted a trial. Trials 1 and 2 were identical while trial 3 differed from the first two in that one of the circles was modified. Subjects were ignorant as to the location of the modified circle and prior to the third trial, were challenged to identify the modified circle. A comparison of trials 2 and 3 indicated that the appearance of the modified circle was associated with an attenuation of the SSVEP in the occipito/parietal region. The same comparison indicated a pronounced SSVEP attenuation in the centro/parietal region during the interval that subjects were anticipating the appearance of the modified circle. These results suggest a distinction between the cortical activation patterns occurring during different phases of a visual vigilance task.

Steady state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) topography in a graded working memory task

The steady state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) elicited by a diffuse 13-Hz visual flicker was recorded from 64 scalp sites in 30 subjects performing a low and high demand version of an object working memory task. During the perceptual component of the task, the SSVEP amplitude was reduced at left and right parieto-occipital sites. During the hold or memory component of the task, the SSVEP amplitude exhibited a load-dependent increase at frontal and occipito-parietal sites, while the SSVEP latency exhibited a load-dependent reduction at central and left frontal sites. We suggest that SSVEP amplitude changes index cortical information processing modes in that perceptual processes are associated with an SSVEP amplitude reduction, while holding information in active short-term or working memory is associated with an SSVEP amplitude increase. We also discuss changes in SSVEP amplitude and latency in terms of changes in the behavior of cortico-cortico and thalamo-cortico loops that utilize cortical layer I. Such cortico-cortico and thalamo-cortical loops are also proposed to constitute a neurophysiological mechanism for holding information in working memory.

Steady-state visually evoked potential topography during the Wisconsin card sorting test

This paper describes, for the first time, changes in steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) topography associated with the performance of a computerised version of the Wisconsin card sort test (WCS). The SSVEP was recorded from 64 scalp sites and was elicited by a 13 Hz spatially uniform visual flicker presented continuously while 16 subjects performed the WCS. in the WCS, the sort criterion was automatically changed after subjects had sorted 10 cards correctly. Feedback on the 11th card always constituted a cue for a change in the sort criterion. It was found that in the 1-2 sec interval after the occurrence of the cue to change sort criterion, the prefrontal, central and right parieto-temporal regions showed a pronounced attenuation in SSVEP amplitude and an increase in phase lag. These changes, interpreted as an increase in regional cortical activity, are not apparent in the equivalent portions of the WCS when the sort criterion does not need to be changed. These results indicate that the levels of prefrontal and right parieto-temporal activity varied during the performance of the WCS, peaking at the times a change in sort criterion was required.

Investigation of the effects of solid lipid curcumin on cognition and mood in a healthy older population

Curcumin possesses many properties which may prevent or ameliorate pathological processes underlying age-related cognitive decline, dementia or mood disorders. These benefits in preclinical studies have not been established in humans. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial examined the acute (1 and 3 h after a single dose), chronic (4 weeks) and acute-on-chronic (1 and 3 h after single dose following chronic treatment) effects of solid lipid curcumin formulation (400 mg as Longvida®) on cognitive function, mood and blood biomarkers in 60 healthy adults aged 60–85. One hour after administration curcumin significantly improved performance on sustained attention and working memory tasks, compared with placebo. Working memory and mood (general fatigue and change in state calmness, contentedness and fatigue induced by psychological stress) were significantly better following chronic treatment. A significant acute-on-chronic treatment effect on alertness and contentedness was also observed. Curcumin was associated with significantly reduced total and LDL cholesterol and had no effect on hematological safety measures. To our knowledge this is the first study to examine the effects of curcumin on cognition and mood in a healthy older population or to examine any acute behavioral effects in humans. Results highlight the need for further investigation of the potential psychological and cognitive benefits of curcumin in an older population.

Cocoa polyphenols enhance positive mood states but not cognitive performance: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial

This study aimed to examine the acute and sub-chronic effects of cocoa polyphenols on cognition and mood. In a randomized, double-blind study, healthy middle-aged participants received a dark chocolate drink mix standardized to contain 500 mg, 250 mg or 0 mg of polyphenols (placebo) in a parallel-groups design. Participants consumed their assigned treatment once daily for 30 days. Cognition was measured with the Cognitive Drug Research system and self-rated mood with the Bond–Lader Visual Analogue Scale. Participants were tested at baseline, at 1, 2.5 and 4 h after a single acute dose and again after receiving 30 days of treatment. In total, 72 participants completed the trial. After 30 days, the high dose of treatment significantly increased self-rated calmness and contentedness relative to placebo. Mood was unchanged by treatment acutely while cognition was unaffected by treatment at all time points. This randomized controlled trial is perhaps the first to demonstrate the positive effects of cocoa polyphenols on mood in healthy participants. This provides a rationale for exploring whether cocoa polyphenols can ameliorate the symptoms associated with clinical anxiety or depression.

Multivitamin-multimineral supplementation and mortality: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BACKGROUND Multivitamins are the most commonly used supplement in the developed world. Recent epidemiologic findings suggest that multivitamin use increases the risk of mortality. OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine whether multivitamin-multimineral treatment, used for primary or secondary prevention, increases the risk of mortality in independently living adults. DESIGN We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Multiple electronic databases were systematically searched from March to October 2012. Randomized controlled primary or secondary prevention trials were considered for inclusion. Eligible trials investigated daily multivitamin-multimineral supplementation for ≥1 y. Cohorts described as institutionalized or as having terminal illness (tertiary prevention) were excluded. The number of deaths and the sample size of each study arm were extracted independently by 2 researchers. Twenty-one articles were included in the analysis, which generated a total pooled sample of 91,074 people and 8794 deaths. These trials were pooled in a meta-analysis, and the outcomes were expressed as RRs and 95% CIs. RESULTS The average age of the pooled sample was 62 y, and the average duration of supplementation was 43 mo. Across all studies, no effect of multivitamin-multimineral treatment on all-cause mortality (RR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.94, 1.02) was observed. There was a trend for a reduced risk of all-cause mortality across primary prevention trials (RR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.89, 1.00). Multivitamin-multimineral treatment had no effect on mortality due to vascular causes (RR: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.93, 1.09) or cancer (RR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.88, 1.04). No statistical evidence of heterogeneity or publication bias was observed. CONCLUSION Multivitamin-multimineral treatment has no effect on mortality risk.

Steady state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) topography changes associated with cocoa flavanol consumption.

In a randomized, double-blind placebo controlled trial, 63 middle-aged volunteers aged between 40 and 65 years were administered a daily chocolate drink containing 250 mg or 500 mg cocoa flavanols versus a low cocoa flavanol (placebo) drink over a 30-day period. Participants were tested at baseline as well as at the end of the treatment period on a test of Spatial Working Memory. Steady State Probe Topography (SST) was used to assess neurocognitive changes associated with cocoa flavanol supplementation during the completion of the Spatial Working Memory task. SST is an electrophysiological technique which utilizes a 13 Hz diffuse visual flicker in order to generate a steady state visually evoked potential (SSVEP). Changes in the amplitude and phase of the SSVEP response after 30 days were compared between treatment groups. Behavioral measures of accuracy and reaction time were not found to be significantly different between treatment groups, while average SSVEP amplitude and phase differences at a number of posterior parietal and centro-frontal sites were found to be significantly different between groups during memory encoding, the working memory hold period and retrieval. In the absence of significant behavioral effects, these differences in brain activation can be interpreted as evidence of increased neural efficiency in spatial working memory function associated with chronic cocoa flavanol consumption.

Improved cognitive performance after dietary supplementation with a Pinus radiata bark extract formulation.

Dietary interventions may have the potential to counter age‐related cognitive decline. Studies have demonstrated an improvement in age‐related cognitive impairment in animals after supplementation with plant extracts containing flavonoids but there are few human studies. This double‐blind, controlled study examined the effects on cognitive performance of a 5 week supplementation with Enzogenol® Pinus radiata bark extract containing flavonoids, in 42 males aged 50–65 years, with a body mass index >25. Participants were supplemented for 5 weeks either with Enzogenol® plus vitamin C, or with vitamin C only. A battery of computerized cognitive tests was administered, and cardiovascular and haematological parameters were assessed prior to and following supplementation. The speed of response for the spatial working memory and immediate recognition tasks improved after supplementation with Enzogenol® plus vitamin C, whereas vitamin C alone showed no improvements. A trend in a reduction of systolic blood pressure was observed with Enzogenol® plus vitamin C, but not with vitamin C alone. The blood safety parameters were unchanged. The findings suggest a beneficial effect of supplementation with Enzogenol® on cognition in older individuals. Larger studies are needed to ascertain its potential as a preventive treatment for age‐related cognitive decline. Copyright

Human neural responses elicited to observing the actions of others

Monkey electrophysiological and human neuroimaging studies indicate the existence of specialized neural systems for the perception and execution of actions. To date, the dynamics of these neural systems in humans have not been well studied. Here, we investigated the spatial and temporal behavior of human neural responses elicited to viewing motion of the face, hand, and body. Scalp event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in 20 participants viewing videotaped mouth (opening, closing), hand (closing, opening), and body stepping (forward, backward) movements. ERP peak differences within the movements of each body part were compared using topographical maps of voltage, voltage difference, and Students t-test at ERP peak latencies. Predominantly temporoparietal negative ERPs occurred to motion of all body parts within 200 ms postmovement onset. Hand closure elicited a significantly greater negativity than opening, particularly in the left hemisphere. Vertex positive ERPs within 300 ms postmovement onset were elicited to hand and body motion. A significantly greater positivity occurred for the body stepping forward relative to stepping backward. The ERP topography was consistent with observed activation foci in human neuroimaging studies. Our data indicate that the neural activity of a system dedicated to the perception of high-level motion stimuli can rapidly differentiate between movements across and within body parts.
