Abstract A series of novel polyimides with naphthalene units in the chain has been synthesized. The polyimides were prepared from 1,3- and 1,4-bis(1,8-dicarboyxlic anhydride-4-naphthaloyl)benzene (III) and six diamines in m-cresol in the presence of various catalysts. The influence of monomer structure and the reaction conditions on polymer properties were investigated.

A series of polymers from dinaphthalene dianhydrides and aromatic diamines has been synthesized using one-step high-temperature polycondensation. The influence of the monomers structure on the polymers properties has been investigated.

Abstract A series of model compounds has been synthesized from 4-benzoylnaphthalic anhydride and oxydianiline in various solvents (aprotic, protic), with or without catalyst at 180°C. A mechanism of the reaction is proposed.

Abstract The high-temperature condensation of 4-benzoyl-1,8-naphthalene anhydride with 2,6-dimethylaniline and o-phenylenediamine was investigated. The structures of the compounds obtained were determined using FT-IR, UV–VIS, 13C NMR, DSC and MS. The directions of reactivities of intermediate isoimides and imides were investigated.

During high-temperature condensation of six-membered naphthalene anhydrides with aromatic primary amines, at first, naphthalisoimides were formed, having cis or trans structures in dependence on absence or presence of acidic catalysts. Only the trans naphthalisoimides isomerized to the naphthalimides in the presence of basic catalysts during heating or UV irradiation. The mechanism of naphthalisoimides formation and their rearrangement to naphthalimides has been proposed.
