Abstract We describe a new genus of anomaline scarab, Anomalorhina (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anomalini) from Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Anomala turrialbana Ohaus is transferred into this genus, and a new species, Anomalorhina osaensis, is described. Anomalorhina is characterized by the clypeal apex that is abruptly reflexed, the base of the frons that has prominent tubercles in males, the pronotum with a depressed fovea in males, and the pronotum with the apical bead posteriorly produced and V-shaped at the middle in females. We summarize the biological importance of the 16 genera of New World anomaline scarabs, including comments on agricultural pests, larvae, and natural history. We provide an overview and synopsis of each of the New World anomaline genera with comments on biology and characteristics for identification.

ABSTRACT Orizabus australis Ratcliffe and Solís is described as a new species from Costa Rica. It resembles Orizabus hondurensis Ratcliffe and Cave from Honduras and is distinguished from that species. Species of Orizabus Fairmaire are known from the central United States to Honduras, but O. australis represents the first known occurrence for the genus in Costa Rica where it represents the southernmost occurrence of the genus. A revised key to the genera of Pentodontini of Costa Rica is provided, and O. australis is incorported into emended couplets of previously published keys to males and females of Orizabus species.

Abstract New species of Phyllophaga (s.str.) are described from 12 Costa Rican localities as follows: P. tilarana new species, P. tapantina new species, P. talamancana new species, P. guapiloides new species, and P. puntarenosa new species from Cartago y Puntarenas provinces; P. naranjina new species, and P. lorencita new species from Alajuela and Cartago provinces. Most of these species are from submontane rain forests located between 800 and 1,750 m of altitude; P. talamancana and P.naranjina were collected in grasslands or coffee plantations, and P. puntarenosa was collected between 50 and 1,200 m of altitude in areas including tropical deciduous forests. Drawings of male genital capsules, female genital plates and tarsal claws are provided.
