O aluno surdo na escola regular: imagem e ação do professor

Angélica Bronzatto de Paiva e Silva; Maria Cristina da Cunha Pereira

With the objective of understanding the image that teachers of regular (non-specialized) schools make about deafness and deaf students, as well as the influence of this image in the teaching process, it was performed a series of interviews and observations in the classroom of seven teachers of regular primary school, in which a deaf student is present. The analysis of data was based on the Content Analysis, proposed by Bardin (1977), in which the following thematic categories have been established: intellectual, behavior, learning and language. The analysis of the data indicated that the language difficult of the deaf child leads, in many cases, to the building by the teacher of an incorrect image of the deaf student, which is reflected in the teachers behavior towards these students. Even though the students are considered to have good learning skills, good behavior and, good potential for learning, all the teachers observed seem to treat the deaf student as having a lot of difficulties to follow the school curriculum.

The objective of this study was to analyze the point of view of parents in relation to the cochlear implant, their level of information concerning the implant, its risks and benefits, and their expectations towards their childrens future. Ten parents of deaf children candidate for the cochlear implant at Unicamps Clinical Hospital were interviewed. Based on a qualitative approach, a content analysis showed that the majority of parents seek the cure for deafness, and consequently, the acquisition of speech with the cochlear implant. For these families, the cochlear implant is seen both as the solution to their childrens deafness and as a path for a better future. It has been evidenced that during the acquisition of knowledge about the implant, parents experienced anxiety and anguish when faced with the risks and benefits of the procedure, and the need to choose between performing and not performing the cochlear implant.

Gabriela de Paula Teixeira; Angélica Bronzatto de Paiva e Silva; Maria Cecília Marconi Pinheiro Lima

Our aims were to know the conception of deafness in hearing mothers of deaf children; the information they received about the educational approach of the deaf; and the manner of communication they choose with the children. Qualitative study, with a semi structured interview ending with the saturation of informations. The sample was composed by seven mothers and it was used the technique of content analysis. The data showed that none of the participants received information about deafness and the possibilities of (re)habilitation following diagnosis. The majority of the mothers did not choose the institution the child would attend and did not have a conception of deafness, except one mother that showed a socio-anthropological conception. The form of communication among mothers and their children varied according to the degree of the child’s deafness. Conclusion: The majority of the participants did not recognize the ideology of deaf identity.
