Curing of N,N′-diglycidylimides with polyfunctional compounds

Ana Mantecón; V. Cádiz; Angels Serra; P.A. Martínez

Abstract This paper describes the curing reactions of new N , N ′-diglycidylimides containing trimellitimide units. Reactions were carried out using several polyfunctional curing agents, viz. aromatic primary diamines and phthalic anhydride. Spectroscopic techniques were used to study the curing process. The course of reaction was followed by i.r. spectroscopy. Some intermediate species were detected by recording 13 C-NMR spectra until the products became insoluble in the usual deuterated solvents.

New glycidyl ester compounds containing a preformed imide ring. I

Angels Serra; V. Cádiz; Ana Mantecón; Pedro‐Alberto Martínez

Abstract The synthesis of the new esterglycidyl compounds produced by condensation of bis-carboxyimides with a large excess of epichlorohydrin were reported. To define the optimal conditions of condensation the process with monofunctional compounds were studied at first. For all synthesis, yield and epoxide and chlorine contents were found. The structure of glycidyl esters was determined by elementary analysis, IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectra. The physical properties were also defined.

Synthesis and oxirane ring-opening polymerization of tetrahydrophthalimide glycidyl derivatives

M. Galià; J.C. Ronda; Ana Mantecón; Angels Serra; V. Cádiz

Abstract Tetrahydrophthalimide glycidyl derivatives have been synthesized and then polymerized using Al (OiPr) 3 /ZnCl 2 (1:1) as catalyst. Depending on which heteroatom was directly attached to the glycidyl moeity, different results were obtained. When it is linked to imidic nitrogen, longer reaction times were required but higher molecular weights were obtained, as deduced from the non-detection of end-groups by elemental analysis and 1 H-NMR spectra. By means of 1 H- and 13 C-NMR spectra, the oligomeric structure has been characterized. Two fractions, isotactic and atactic, could be isolated. Thermal behaviour has been studied by DSC and TGA.

Preparation and thermal behaviour of copolymers from glycidylether and glycidylimide

M. Galià; V. Cádiz; Ana Mantecón; Angels Serra

Abstract Copolyethers with nadimide or tetrahydrophthalimide derivative pendant groups were prepared by ring-opening polymerization from phenylglycidylether and the corresponding glycidylimide. Elemental analyses led to the compositions of the copolymers which do not closely coincide with the ratio of monomers in the feed. The thermal behaviour of the copolymers was examined and properties of copolymers were compared with these of the homopolymers.
