Exploring Aspiring Principals' Perceptions of Principalship A Slovenian Case Study

Anita Trnavčevič; silva roncelli vaupot

A lot is expected of Slovenian principals, yet very little is known about aspiring principals own expectations of principalship. Currently there is no Slovenian study of aspiring principals, although they represent the majority of those enrolled on the `certification programme of the National School for Leadership in Education. The purpose of this article is to explore: (1) what aspiring principals perceive as principalship and how they define it; (2) what participants perceive as significant influences on principalship; (3) the tensions that aspiring principals might perceive and anticipate as a part of principalship; and (4) the metaphors used for principalship. Data indicate that participants discuss principalship from a managerial position in which the main tasks revolve around the `smooth work of an organization. Principals personalities play pivotal role in successful principalship, while the legal context, legislation and national policies `dictate schools work. Power is concentrated with principals, which the metaphors nicely reflect. Principals are seen to be paternalistic and hierarchical.

Internet Marketing Communication and Schools: The Slovenian Case Study

Aleš Tankosić; Anita Trnavčevič

Internet Marketing Communication and Schools: The Slovenian Case Study Worldwide, some 1.32 billon people now use the Internet (Internet World Stats 2007). In the developed countries the Internet is also present in educational institutions; schools use the Internet as a means of communication with their customers. In Slovenia, however, research focusing on Internet marketing communication are rare in the field of education. This paper provides the theoretical framework and the results of the qualitative case study conducted at a school centre in Slovenia in 2005. Data were collected through group interviews and document analysis. The findings support the School Centre teachers claim that the Internet does not enable personal contacts and the sensory collection of physical evidence, which are considered to be major disadvantages of Internet marketing communication. The teachers who consider Internet marketing communication to be an advantage stress the importance of virtuality which can function as a simulation of communication in the real world. Their adversaries, on the other hand, stress the importance of the physical world and warn us of the negative sides of virtuality.

Sustainable Natural and Cultural Heritage Tourism in Protected Areas

Armand Faganel; Anita Trnavčevič

From once common delta marshes, which were shaped into the saltpans, found near all the coastal towns of Slovenian Coast, there are only few coastal wetlands left. The concessionaire of Secovlje Salina Nature Park is entitled to use the natural pans for traditional salt-making; in addition, under the laws and regulations the concessionaire is allowed to perform certain activities in the Park: management of the Park, development of sustainable tourism and the farming of aquatic organisms. This paper provides an overview of trends that affect the planning of tourism in protected areas, the growth and diversification of this niche market, and the potential benefits and risks of merging tourism with natural and cultural heritage. Through the content analysis of documents, the case study of planning for sustainable development in the protected area is examined: the sensitivity of development of infrastructure and services, tourism marketing and management challenges in a secure area, and tools for tourism management.

School leadership and equity: Slovenian elements

Anita Trnavčevič

Many countries around the world have become what might be called ‘multiethnic’ societies. They have to respond to various and diverse culturally based challenges and traditions, which are part of the ‘flow of nations’. Slovenia, as a member of the European Union, has opened the door of the State to the European labour force but it is still difficult at present to label it a ‘multiethnic society’. However, mainly for economic reasons, there has always been inward migration of people from the other former Yugoslav republics to large urban areas. Schools in these areas are challenged to respond to the diverse culturally based specific needs of these students. There have been few, if any, studies of how schools have actually responded to the demographics in their schools. This study presents evidence on how a school that has a reputation as a so-called ‘yugotrash’ school has recognized differences and is addressing them.

Constructions of Private Tutoring in Slovenian Online Chatrooms

Armand Faganel; Anita Trnavčevič

This chapter presents an exploratory study of discourses about private tutoring. Slovenia, as a young democracy just entering its third decade, is still struggling to embrace the free market economy. It has many grey areas with no or little tax regulation. Private tutoring has been widely recognised as one of the strongest components of the shadow economy, but no previous research has been undertaken on its scale and implications. For the present study, a qualitative analysis was chosen to explore the content and nature of discourses on different forums and websites reflecting both demand and supply of tutoring. The findings are discussed and compared with international knowledge about the phenomenon.

The factors of choice of change methods: What is their impact on consequences of change?

Roberto Biloslavo; Anita Trnavčevič

The basic purpose of this research is to examine which factors have an influence on the choice of method of change and how they are linked to negative consequences which result from an inappropriate approach towards change. A quantitative approach to research work is applied. The data was obtained by a questionnaire, and then processed by using the method of factor analysis and multiple regression. Based on research findings we could conclude if between the factors of choice of change methods and negative consequences exists a direct link. The research is especially important for managers in the transition period when they approach different change methods proposed by consulting companies, academics and others. If management during this process will consider inappropriate factors in selection of change methods we believe the probability of failure, understood as lower added value for organization stakeholders, will increase. The research introduces new findings concerning the link between factors of choice of change methods, and the extent of the undesired consequences of change. Research studies of this nature are not presently to be found in the literature on change management.

Cuban Tourism—The Marginalized Communist Country’s First Step Towards Sustainable Development

Armand Faganel; Anita Trnavčevič

Cuban tourism gained momentum after the USA relationship improvement. Marginalized country, mysterious and exotic, famous for excellent rum, nice tropical weather, sensual music and dance, famous cigars and resourcefully maintained classic cars, is now looking for investors in tourism infrastructure. Tourism sector represents an important source of revenue for the country, right behind the health services export. European tourists are among the most numerous visitors of island; tourism is increasing from year to year, as the fear grows that the paradise will disappear soon. As the demand expands, so does the need for the improvement of tourism infrastructure. Country is in a bad shape, money is needed to maintain free health and education systems. The Cuban Tourism ministry is considering an increase from 63,000 hotel rooms to 85,500 by 2020, and planning new resorts with the help of foreign investment (eTN 2016). With the research of economic and social changes these plans will bring to the society, we evaluate the possible scenarios for regional development and their consequences. Literature review and content analysis of available data and documents have been deployed.
