This paper focuses on the role of transportation infrastructure in freight accessibility from a sustainable and multi-modal perspective. Several accessibility measures are applied separately yet simultaneously to water, rail and road transportation systems. It appears that the transportation system is structuring the Belgian space geographically and topographically (inertia of space due to transportation infrastructure), but that economic activities are less associated with transporta-tion systems than with the population. This means that either economic activities are footloose, or that there is a major discrepancy between transportation infrastructure and economic locations. Land-use planners should be aware of this when making decisions about the mobility of the future. Copyright (c) 2003 by the Royal Dutch Geographical Society KNAG.

Transport is debated by many, and liberalization processes, transport policy, transport and climate change and increased competition between transport modes are the subject of heated discussion. Smart Transport Networks illustrates that whether concerning road, water, rail or air, knowledge on the structure of transport markets is crucial in order to tackle transport issues. The book therefore explores key factors concerning the structure of transport markets, their environmental impact, and questions why decision makers often fail to tackle transport-related problems.

This paper presents the results of the survey conducted under the auspices of the Belgian National Committee of Geography. The survey focused on the present employment and complementary studies of Belgian geography alumni of all Belgian universities that graduated before 2003. With respect to employment and to a large extent with respect to complementary studies and degrees, it is shown that the trend of obtaining a teacher’s certificate is declining as well as of being employed in secondary and higher education. By contrast, spatial and regional planning, research and consulting, GIS, and ecology and environmental management have gained considerable interest as potential fields of employment outside education. The proportion of geography graduates being unemployed remains very low. This should keep the field quite attractive in the coming years.
