Activation of Latent Collagenase of Human Leukocytes and Gingival Fluid by Bacterial Plaque

Veli-Jukka Uitto; Anna-Maija Raeste

Collagenase activity was studied in human leukocytes, gingival crevicular fluid and bacterial plaque, with soluble radioactive collagen as substrate. Inflamed gingiva liberated vertebrate type collagenase into the crevicular fluid in active form. Healthy gingiva, in contrast, released collagenase in a latent form that could be activated by trypsin or plaque. Plaque also stimulated leukocytes to release collagenase, and activated the latent enzyme.

Immunohistochemical identification of lysozyme in the minor salivary glands of man

S. Reitamo; M. Klockars; Anna-Maija Raeste

Abstract The immunoperoxidase-immunoglobulin bridge technique was used to study the distribution of lysozyme (LZM) in the minor salivary glands and other tissues in man. Specific LZM-staining was seen in the intralobular ducts of all glands. Acinar LZM was detected in von Ebners serous glands of the tongue, in the serous demilunes of the mixed glands and, to a considerably lesser extent, in a few pure mucous glands. As LZM was detected only in the salivary glands and, with the exception of a few resident granulocytes, monocytes and tissue macrophages, in no other tissue within the oral cavity, it is probable that salivary glands are the principal source of salivary LZM.

Identification of Blood Monocytes by Demonstration of Lysozyme and Peroxidase Activity

Enni Syrén; Anna-Maija Raeste

By a simple cytochemical method for the de- monstration of lysozyme (muramidase) activity, more than 95 % of human- and rat-blood monocytes could be identified and differentiated from lymphocytes. Per
