Synergistic effects in hydrodechlorination of organic compounds catalyzed by metals

Magdalena Bonarowska; Anna Śrębowata; Zbigniew Karpiński

Synergistic effects in hydrodechlorination of organic compounds catalyzed by metals The search for the most suitable hydrodechlorination catalysts should consider both the C-Cl bond strength in a molecule subjected to reaction and the metal-chlorine bond, which should be neither too strong nor too weak. An improvement of Pd- and Pt-based catalysts can be achieved by alloying with metals which bind chlorine even less strongly, e.g. with gold. Addition of platinum to palladium would also be beneficial because of metal-chloride bond energy considerations. Analogous effects occur in the hydrodechlorination of dichlorodifluoromethane and 1,2-dichloroethane, the molecules characterized by stronger carbon-chlorine bonds.

This work investigates the catalytic properties of silica and aluminosilicate SBA‐3 supported iridium catalysts in aqueous phase hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene. SBA‐3, AlSBA‐3, Ir/SBA‐3 and Ir/AlSBA‐3 were thoroughly characterized by XRD, BET, TPR‐H2, H2 chemisorption, TPD‐NH3 and investigated in catalytic removal of trichloroethylene from water in batch reactor under mild operation conditions. Uniformly dispersed small iridium nanoparticles (∼3 nm) was found to be active in catalytic purification of water from chloroorganic compound. The studies showed that the differences in catalytic behavior of Ir/SBA‐3 and Ir/AlSBA‐3 depended on the properties of the support. The best catalytic properties in purification of water from trichloroethylene was obtained for Ir supported on more hydrophilic and ordered AlSBA‐3 with acid sites.

Herein, it is reported an on‐the‐fly accretion/reaction protocol to evaluate the structure‐performance relationship in the chemoselective flow citral hydrogenation over Ni‐based catalysts. Based on the methodology one was able to determine Ni nanoparticles ideal average size (ca. 9 nm), in a rapid and facile manner. The methodology offers a simple workflow, cost‐effective and adaptable strategy for process intensification and optimization.

Hydrodechlorination of Carbon Tetrachloride and 1,2-Dichloroethane on Palladium Nanoparticles Supported on Metal Fluorides

Ostap Machynskyy; Anna Śrębowata; Erhard Kemnitz; Zbigniew Karpiński

Catalytic activity of palladium supported on strongly acidic aluminum fluoride or on much less acidic magnesium fluoride has been the subject of current research. Both catalysts were synthesized by non-aqueous sol-gel method with subsequent two-stage activation: post-fluorination and reduction. The catalytic behavior of prepared Pd/HS-AlF3 and Pd/HS-MgF2 in the hydrodechlorination reactions of chlorinated hydrocarbons was investigated. It was found that differences in support acidity and catalyst’s activation protocol strongly effect the catalytic performance.
