Abstract A remarkable increase in knowledge of fungal biodiversity in Italy has occurred in the last five years. The authors report up-to-date numbers of fungi (Basidiomycota and Ascomycota) by regions together with distributional and ecological data on hypogeous fungi. Specific case studies such as alpine fungi, orchid mycorrhizas symbionts, invasive species, and the use of macrofungi as food by red squirrels are analyzed. In situ conservation strategies carried out on target species and/or taxonomic groups are also indicated.

The rhizomorphic European species of Antrodia, belonging to the traditionally called Antrodia radiculosa group, are investigated. On the basis of morphological and molecular analysis, the genus Fibroporia is supported. Specimens from Central Europe previously ascribed to Antrodia radiculosa constitute a species of their own, and are herein described as Fibroporia bohemica. Moreover, a new combination, Fibroporia citrina, is proposed.

Lindtneria hydnoidea sp. nov. is described, characterized by a hydnoid hymenophore and a total lack of clamp-connections on the generative hyphae. A key is given to all currently accepted Lindtneria species.

Abstract Two rare Aphyllophorales: Phellinus erectus and Oxyporus latemarginatus. - The presence of the two rare Aphyllophorales species, Phellinus erectus David, Dequatre & Fiasson and Oxyporus latemarginatus (Dur. & Mont.) Donk are reported for the first time in Italy.

An unusual corticioid species with distinctive large basidiospores that develop a distal refractive rostrum when fully mature is described as new. It grows on living bark of Juniperus phoenicea on the Italian island of Sardinia. Because it is morphologically distinct from any known genus of corticioid fungi, the new genus Arrasia is proposed to accommodate it.

Abstract The author deals with the results of a research on the presence of Aphyllophorales in Sasso Fratino Forest, an Integral Natural Reserve, inside the Foreste Casentinesi National Park. The research started in 1987 and till now 171 wood-inhabiting species have been collected. Some of them are new to the Italian mycoflora: Antrodiella fissiliformis, Ceriporia alachuana, Laeticorticium meridioroseum, Parvobasidium cretatum, Pycnoporellus fulgens, while some other must be considered very rare species in Italy: Ganoderma carnosum, Lobulicium occultum, Stereum insignitum, Trechispora echynocystis.

Abstract In this paper an attempt was made to elucidate the relationship between wood-inhabiting fungi and their substrates or habitat. On the basis of observations carried out, over several years, it can be concluded that substrate and environment are very selective for mycoflora.

Abstract Phallogaster saccatus Morgan, new to Italy. - In the present paper the first finding in Italy of the gasteromycetes Phallogaster saccatus Morgan is described. Specimens of Ph. saccatus, which is considered typical of North America, were collected in an area of the Dolomites. This Italian finding follows five previous reports in other European countries. On account of the mycological interest of the finding, the macro- and microscopic characters are described.
